Standards and manuals of Mechanized Tunnelling ITA WG-14 published Recommendations and Guidelines for Tunnel Boring Machine in 2000, which consists of four individual reports covering the wide variety of mechanized tunnelling from soft ground machines to hard rock machines. We think that it provides the common ground of understanding about mechanized tunnelling in the international society. Since then, we discussed the universal recommendation of mechanized tunnelling and come up to the conclusion that it is impractical to make the universal one, since social conditions are quite different by the countries. For instance, degree of infrastructure development varies and tolerable limits of environmental disturbance both during construction and after completion are quite different. Not only technical conditions but also these social conditions shall be well considered for the machine selection, since they have big impacts to total project costs. Instead of the universal recommendation, we decided to make the report to introduce standards and manuals of mechanized tunnelling in member nations. We hope that this report is used as reference guides for prospective owners of tunnel projects. WG14 Mechanized Tunnelling

EN 12336 : 2005
EN 12336:2005 Abstract The document is applicable to all types of shield machines and associated back-up equipment, horizontal thrustboring machines and auger boring machines or parts therefo. It specifies the essential safety requirements for the design, 46 construction and maintenance of such machines together with the methods of verification. Shieldmachines include : Open face shields for both hand and mechanical excavation ; full face tunnel boring machines ; microtunnelling machines. Back-up equipment includes : Towed back-up equipment ; erectors ; pipe jack equipment. Additional equipment which may form an integral part of a 46 shield machine or back-up equipment and is used for compressed air (hyperbaric/plenum) working is not coverd by this document.
