To our Readers: With the nations presidential, state, county and local elections set for Nov. 6, many area voters already have their absentee ballots in their hands, and others are focusing hard on preparing to go to the polls in person. Many probably also are a bit daunted at the number of candidates and proposals facing them this year. Election clerks throughout Michigan are predicting long lines and lengthy waits for those who like the traditional process of casting their ballots in person. To help voters gather information on the candidates and the issues, beginning today The News-Herald Newspapers is kicking up its reports on Election 2012 in all editions leading up to the election. Over the next seven editions of the newspaper and on our website, thenewsherald.com Downriver voters can learn about the Democratic and Republican candidates for the White House, the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House of Representatives, the Michigan Legislature, the State Board of Education and members of various courts and university boards, as well as the Wayne County Commission and the county offices of prosecuting attorney, sheriff, clerk, treasurer and register of deeds. We also will provide information on Downriver area municipal and school board races, as well as on local ballot questions. On Page 3-A of todays editions, you will find information on state ballot questions 1 and 2. Information on the other four ballot issues proposals 3 through 6 will be published in the Oct. 14 and 17 editions of the newspaper. Look for the Election 2012 logo to find other stories on other pages, as well. In addition to the six Michigan ballot questions, we also will follow the five Wayne County ballot questions. WOODHAVEN A kitten that allegedly was thrown out of a moving car Thursday is alive and already has an adoptive home. Animal Control Officer Laura Jensen found the kitten scared but unscathed Friday afternoon, concealed amid brush
just about 20 feet from where police say a Fraser man launched it from his car, on King Road west of Allen. Animal Control Officer Becky Swayze said it took some time for Jensen to coax the kitten out of its hiding spot, but when it finally came out it was friendly.

ECORSE Police have little information on those who fired shots into a crowd Sunday morning, leaving a young woman dead and at least one other person wounded outside an after-hours club in a building owned by a city councilwoman. Chanel Weddington, a 22-year-old city resident, was shot in the upper body at about 3:35 a.m. outside the buildDOWNRIVERS#1 CHEVY DEALER ing at 3740 12th St. She was rushed to Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital in a police squad car, where she died shortly after. A 38-year-old Southfield man who was shot was taken to Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn and admitted for surgery. His condition was unknown yesterday. Also, another man, 30, might have been shot in the leg but police have not confirmed that, Public Safety on Allen Rd. at West Rd. While emergency medical services have been outsourced to HealthLink, the Fire Department is supposed to be told of all medical runs, Douglas said. He said he was brought up to speed on the situation when he reported for his shift at 8 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters in Ecorse often respond to high-priority calls such as shootings because there is sometimes a delay in HealthLinks response time, Douglas said. The woman should have been taken in an ambulance to Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn, he said. We couldve tried to control the bleeding, but I dont know where the victim was hit, he said. ... Its one of those things. (I) dont want to be an armchair quarterback. It depends on the circumstances. Councilwoman Stacy Wheeler owns the building that houses The Place, reportedly being used as an after-hours social club. Champagne said officers spoke with her at the scene and she has been cooperating. Lynch was an institution within the Red Wings organization, having held the position of public address announcer at Joe Louis Arena from 1985 to 2012. He began his career in 1949 as the teams play-by-play announcer. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1985 as a media honoree and
winner of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster. Born Aug. 7, 1917, as Frank Joseph James Lynch in Windsor, he grew up in Courtesy of Nancy Tuinier Hamilton, Ontario, but has Budd Lynch made Wyandotte his home for as long as most people (Two years) ago you were can remember. given the key to the city, Mayor Joseph Peterson which you so deserved.
