Information for the parents/patients undergoing Squint Surgery Squint Surgery

As shown in Fig 1 there are six eye muscles that control eye movements In a squint surgery the muscles are tightened or made loose (Balancing of muscles) This is accomplished through small holes (approx 4mm and not visible from outside) as shown in Fig 2 The operation is performed with the stitches which are not easily visible and gets absorbed on its own within 2 mo The surgery takes nearly 7-8 minutes per muscle It is done on either eye / both eyes / plan of which eye require surgery can change on table depending on the health of eye muscles and ocular deviation under anesthesia Remember! The surgery is always done for the angle that remains after wearing the glasses. There would not be any bandages / goggles after surgery and there are no food or activity restrictions after surgery The patient/child can resume all the activities within 2-3 days after the surgery The eyes would be red for 2 weeks and then pink in colour for 2-3 months Nearly 15% of our patients require adjustment of the stitches (it takes 5-7 min for adjustment of stitches) after squint surgery either in OPD or in the operation theatre depending on the age of the patient Success rate of squint surgery ranges from 70% - 90% A resurgery may be required later for which Jyotirmay Eye Clinic takes partial responsibility and would offer appropriate reduction in charges.

Anesthesia Local Anesthesia: This is achieved by giving an injection near the eye. It is given a few minutes before the surgery and given very slowly so that the patient does not feel very uncomfortable. The effect of the injection lasts for 2-3 hrs General Anesthesia: This is the most favored method for children or anxious adults. During the surgery, the patient is on oxygen. Pulse, ECG, oxygen, CO2, and BP are constantly monitored by a very experienced anesthetist. It is very important that the patient is starving (should not take even the sips of water) from approximately 6 hours prior to the surgery and has perfect health. This has to be certified by the physician or pediatrician. Our anesthetist takes final decision on the safety of the anesthesia administration. For us safety of the child is paramount. Nevertheless, general anesthesia carries a small risk of unanticipated event and the patient / parents should know this. We will take all the precautions to ensure nothing goes wrong during or after the surgery but, biological systems are not fully predictable. We use worlds best (Sevoflurane) Anesthesia & VM8 monitoring System (Philips USA) for childs safety and quickest recovery. In an unlikely event, if child needs to be shifted to ICU the cost will be borne by the parents. Common side effects of a squint surgery world over are as follows
Under or over corrections (Requires repeat surgery after few months or few years) 20% Vomiting after surgery 20% Double Vision (Most times intentional) for few days to few weeks 5%

Rare complications are many that include bleeding, infection, movement restriction, abnormal head posture, difference in the size of the eye aperture etc. Very rare events of vision loss and death are also reported.
