What is HDMI ? HDMI (High-Definition Multi-media Interface) is a new standard in A/V Audio/Visual connections that is used to transmit digital signals from your cable set top box, DVD player or satellite receiver to your high definition television (HDTV), LCD TV, LCD projector, plasma TV, or any other device that supports HDMI connections.

Detail of benefits of HDMI over traditional analog connections include: All-digital rendering of video without the losses associated with analog interfaces and their unnecessary digital-to-analog conversions. Lower cost: a single HDMI connection replaces 3 video connections for high definition video and 6 audio connections for high-resolution audio. Audio: HDMI supports multiple audio formats, from standard stereo to multi-channel surround-sound. Ease-of-use: HDMI combines video and multi-channel audio into a single cable, eliminating the cost, complexity, and confusion of multiple cables currently used in A/V systems. Intelligence: HDMI supports two-way communication between the video

source (such as a DVD player) and the DTV, enabling new functionality. HDMI has the capacity to support existing enhanced and high-definition video formats including 480p, 720p, 1080i, and even 1080p as well as standard definition formats such as NTSC or PAL. HDMI vs DVI The standard Type A HDMI connector has 19 pins and a higher resolution Type B also exists but is not yet in common use. HDMI is backwards-compatible with the single-link Digital Visual Interface (DVI) commonly found on older HD televisions and set top devices through the use of a suitable adapter or cable, but the audio and remote control features of HDMI will not be available. Additionally, without support for HDCP, the video quality and resolution may be downgraded by the player unit. HDMI 1.3 New Capabilities at a Glance

Lip Sync
HDMI 1.3 incorporatesan automatic audio/video syncing capability that allows devices to perform this synchronization automatically with accuracy.
HDMI 1.3 removes virtually all limits on color selection. The human eye can see a broad range of color. Standard RGB color space allows the display of a portion of the colors that are viewable to the human eye. The next generation xvYCC color space can display virtually the entire gamut of colors viewable by the human eye Next-generation xvYCC color space supports 1.8 times as many colors as existing HDTV signals Lets HDTVs display colors more accurately Enables displays with more natural and vivid colors
Deep Color
HDMI 1.3 supports 30-bit, 36-bit and 48-bit (RGB or YCbCr) color depths, up from the 24-bit depths in previous versions of the HDMI specification. Lets HDTVs and other displays go from millions of colors to billions of colors Eliminates on-screen color banding, for smooth tonal transitions and subtle gradations between colors Enables increased contrast ratio Can represent many times more shades of gray between black and white. At 30-bit pixel depth, four times more shades of gray would be the minimum, and the typical improvement would be eight times or more
