Background and Objective: Variations in telomere mean length (TML) of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are known to have correlation with complex disorders like CAD, cancer, arthritis and SLE. The objective of this study was to determine whether there is any association between TML of PBMCs with the presence and severity of diabetic retinopathy. Methods: The study involved six groups which included - control subjects, NIDDM subjects without diabetic retinopathy, NIDDM subjects with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR)(3 grades Mild NPDR, Moderate NPDR and Severe NPDR) and NIDDM subjects with proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR). Study subjects were selected based on detailed ocular examination and diabetic retinopathy classification was based on ETDRS. Blood was collected for estimation of plasma fasting blood sugar and Hb, HbA1c, lipid profile, urea and creatinine in the serum. PBMCs were isolated for TML determination by southern hybridization using telomere probe. Results: The mean TML in the six groups was 8.19 0.64, 6.59 1.22, 5.58 .69, 5.98 .89, 5.89 1.08 and 5.69 0.92 Kbp respectively in the above mentioned order. Conclusion: There was significant difference found between the mean TML of PBMCs from diabetic individuals (with and without retinopathy) and that of control subjects, and this difference was greater for the group with retinopathy as compared to the diabetic group without retinopathy. Although short TML was strongly associated with the presence of diabetic retinopathy, any possible correlation between the degree of reduction of TML and the severity of diabetic retinopathy could not be established due to the small number of subjects under each category.

Personal Statement Indicate briefly here your Research Interests and Career Goals, why you are interested to participate in the YSP Program (including what you will bring to the YSP and what you hope to gain from it): (no more than one page) My research interest is in specializing in the field of diabetic retinopathy. My work is based on molecular biology techniques, So I want to enhance my knowledge in molecular biology and upgrade my interest in this field by interacting with various scientists around the globe. I am interested to participate in the YSP Program as during my stay in the conference I can meet with other scientists working in the same area and one can have scientific discussions. After presentation of my data I may get valuable suggestions from the scientists to improve my work. As many local problems require a global response. I can contribute to the explanation of many problems. Conferences provide an excellent opportunity to interact with international organizations working in same area which may help in the improvement of research.
