The New D Word - Distraction

By Rev. Chris Shorow, Senior Minister
Distraction. Its the new D word in our world. We are a distracted society being constantly bombarded with sensory overload from many sources. Were distracted on the roadtexting, talking on the phone, eating, listening to the radio. Were distracted at hometelevision, internet, phones, Facebook. Were distracted at workbeing called to wear many different hats and do many different tasks. The one place that I hope were not distracted in is church. But the truth is that we are distracted here as well. It happens to me every Sunday morning as I try to be present in conversation with so many of you. But with all the people, the action, the conversation, I find that I am not as attentive as I wish I were. In fact, sometimes it may seem downright rude. For that, I apologize, and I hope that you do not find as many distractions here. I pray that this will be a place of peace and the presence of God. So how can we be truly present to one another in the one place we are called to reach out to one another? First, I think we need to realize that we cant do it all. We cant speak to everyone wed like to, we cant reach out to every person walking through the halls and we cant hear every prayer concern that is lifted up. We can only reach out to one person at a time, and that is enough. Second, we need to recognize our need for silence and reflection. During our worship time together, we intentionally have many minutes of silence and prayer. Take those opportunities to be quiet and to hear Gods voice. There are very few places in our lives where we can take the time to sit and worship without interruption. Sunday morning is one time for all of us. Finally, I think it is just fine to realize that distraction is a part of our lives. We live in a world that is going to distract us, like it or not. But dont let the distractions take over our lives. And certainly, dont let distractions call us from our ministry to one another. This Sunday we will look at another Old Testament hero, Naaman, who almost let a distraction rob him of a miracle. Dont let that happen to you.
