Kristine Joy Lee Master of Arts in English Education

Abstract

The Filipino language due to its history of connections with many nations of South East Asia, and the influence of European colonization, has developed a very rich and unique vocabulary since its inception from its Austronesian roots. In particular, the influence of the Chinese language is transpired in the Filipino language. According to Jose Villa Panganiban, a linguistic expert, of the 30,000 root words in the Filipino language, there are close to 1,500 from both Hokkien (Min Nan) and Yueh Chinese dialects. History tells us that several Chinese Kingdoms have existed in the area of what we now call Luzon. Then, it was known as the Luzon Empire of the Kingdom of Tokyo. Diplomatic ties have been established with the Chinese dynasties. As a result, the Filipino language, particularly its languages have been influenced. These influences due to contact have reached the whole archipelago, specifically as far as the Sultan of Sulu. Prehistoric evidence attests to the fact that many datus, rajahs, and Lakans (indigenous rulers) in the Philippines were of mixed Filipino and Chinese ancestry. The Chinese Filipinos has always been one of the largest ethnic Filipino groups in the country. Most Chinese in the Philippines speak either the Fujianese or Cantonese dialect. Most unmixed Chinese in the Philippines originated from the province of Fujian in China. They speak the Lan-nang, which is a variant of the Minnan Chinese dialect which is further divided into several sub-dialects. The rest of the unmixed Chinese in the Philippines are mostly of Cantonese origin, with large numbers of descendants originally from the Taishan city of Guangdong province in

Southern China. They speak the Cantonese dialect group/language, although many are raised to speak only the Minnan dialect. The influence of the Chinese culture in the Filipino language has indeed been tremendous. Many of the words embedded in our language have Chinese origins. From a linguistic point of view, this paper aims to research to what extent the Filipino language has been influenced by the Chinese culture and how Filipino words with Chinese origin have been derived and developed.
