at 2:30AM, on Thursday, September 8, 2011 for a mutual aid deployment of four swift water teams to Owego, New York. Alden Water Rescue Team coordinators were deployed and re-routed to Tioga County for numerous water rescues in the town of Waverly, Nichols and Tiogo Center, New York. 21 swift water- adult rescues, 1 child rescue, 8 dogs and 4 cat rescues along with numerous "good intent" calls were carried out. Flooding conditions consisted of average water levels as low as 4 feet and extending to as deep as 12 feet with fast swift water from the Susquehanna River. All rescues were carried out within 48 hours. All rescues were successful with a 16 foot- Avon rescue boat with a 25 hp outboard Suzuki motor and an RDC-rapid deployment craft. Members that responded included Coordinators, James Miller and Ron Klimowicz, Alden Water Rescue Team, Cpt. James Pautler, Lt. Brad Mader, Michael Kegler, Dennis Wellspeak, Chris George, and Fancis George. Alden water rescue was one of only a few water rescue teams contracted during the flooding. As flood waters started to descend, it was an emotional day as everyone returned home safely to Western New York on September 11, 2011. As for residents in the affected areas, they are still faced with months of repairs and cleanup in their destroyed communities.
