Basic relations about P,Q,S, and power factor in single and 3 phase AC systems. Power triangles for various loads. Disadvantages of low power factor. Calculations for power factor improvement for single and 3 phase systems. Devices for power factor improvement in power systems. Nature of light. Basic definitions for various quantities related to illumination and their units. Laws of illumination and their use in design of simple illumination schemes. Polar curves and their uses. Average lux method for design of illumination schemes. Types of lamps and their comparative performance characteristics. Factors in the selection of lamps. Test 1 will cover material up to this point Advantages and applications of electric heating. Basic relations in heating calculations. Methods of heat transfer. Methods of electric heating such as Resistance heating, Induction heating, Dielectric heating and Arc heating and their uses. Electric welding methods and their uses including various resistance and arc welding methods. Space conditioning and Energy requirements for heating/cooling buildings in space conditioning. Electrolysis. Basic definitions and laws of electrolysis. Calculations associated with electrolysis. Applications of electrolysis with examples. Test 2 will be based on material up to this point, but excluding the material covered in Test1. Electric wiring basics, conductor selection, insulation codes, AC resistance, and ampacity calculations. Voltage drop considerations. Branch circuits, their function and design. Feeders and demand factor applications in feeder design. Over current protection. Basics issues related to power quality and their significance in power systems. Renewable energy sources and their significance in future power systems.
