ATHLETICS PROFILE

WHS Softball

Welcome to the 4th edition of the WHS e-newsletter. Term one has come to an end and last week was the 2012 Summer Tournament week. We had teams all round New Zealand competing:

GEORGIA BLACK
It is evident you have vastly improved over the 2011/2012 track season. What has your improvement come down to? -I believe my improvement has come down to controlling my health. Especially iron levels and mentally pushing myself to exceed. Last year I had breathing difficulties and little energy but thanks to medical specialists I have sorted these out and it seems to be helping me and my running. What are your goals going into the North Island Secondary School Champs? - Having the triathlon national Champs a few days before the championships obviously I want to insure I am recovered and ready to run as best I can. I would like to achieve Personal Bests in both the 3000m and the 1500m, placing would be great but it comes down to the day. What are your goals in relation to being Cross Country captain? Being cross country captain is a great privilege, this year I hope to get the team back to former glory. I would like to encourage younger runners to ensure when I leave cross country is a successful sport. Another thing I would like to achieve is getting numbers up in runners in both boys and girls to ensure we have good/strong teams at various events. What are your career aspirations beyond school, or perhaps university? Will you continue running? -At the moment if my running continues to improve I would like to possibly go to America on a scholarship to run and study. At the moment I am in contact with Villanova based in Philadelphia so we will just see what happens there. Otherwise I would like to go to Wellington to study law at Vic, I would in Wellington continue to run for a club. What is your favourite athletics event, for what reasons? -Thats a hard question, the shorter are always over much faster, where as the longer you dont have to heavily rely on your start. 3000m at the moment seems to be my speciality and getting the record was a surprise. So 3000m is definitely a contender to be a favourite. Its all about pacing yourself and self belief. The top two inches as Im always told. Do you have a special training diet? Or any special routines? -I dont bother about what I eat, as I believe younger people shouldnt become over indulged in the sport until a higher elite level is reached. This is to ensure you dont get bored/ unenthusiastic about sporting field. My diet however does include lots of fruit and vegetables A special routine I usually have is having marmite and toast for breakfast, pre race, and I always ensure I do a good warm up and warm down. Do you have any tips to share with younger athletes or those considering doing athletics in the school? -Although you may not be the best at the start, with hard work, self belief and determination you can reach your goals at the end.

A big rowing squad headed to Twizel in the South Island The Waka Ama paddlers were in Rotorua along with the Motor X riders. The Tennis team was in Auckland. Netball trials have been held this week, which is always a busy few days at Springvale Stadium. The Basketball teams have all been named and are training hard. The 1st VX rugby team have had two preseason games and head to Christchurch for a tournament. The Football & Hockey teams have also been training hard, so bring on the cold, wet muddy practices. Term two kicks off with the school Cross Country Champs on Friday 27th of April. This year we are trialling a new course out at Scoutlands. Five days later sees the first big Sports Exchange that the school has participated in for many years. We head to New Plymouth to take on both the Boys and Girls High Schools. The winter sports fields, grounds and courts will again be busy, so if are keen to help with managing teams and coaching give me a call at school. Good luck for the season! Mark Cornaga

WHS Cricket
Wanganui High School Students Dana Garrett, Sam Roebuck and Caleb Greene have been active Junior Coaches for Cricket Wanganui coaching 7-10 year old age groups on a Friday Night. They have started formalising their coaching by completing the first stage of the New Zealand Cricket Coaching Qualification. Cricket Wanganui Operations Manager, Dilan Raj, said he is impressed by the Wanganui High School students work ethic, commitment to coaching the juniors and contribution to the community. There are a number of WHS students that give of their time, but it is this commitment to better themselves as coaches that will truly make a difference not only in the playing of their junior cricketers but also in their own lives towards becoming responsible and contributing adults. They are a credit to Wanganui High School.

Sam Hopper (Head of Sport)

Our 2012 Multisport team was accompanied to Lake Karapiro by a strong group of elite Wanganui High School swimmers eager to compete in New Zealands very first secondary schools Open Water Swim Championships. All of our dedicated swimmers competed in both championships within the two days of competition to help our triathlon teams. We travelled up to Lake Karapiro on Wednesday 28th March ready for an afternoon of Open Water Swim Races, Thursday morning was the individual triathlon races and team races were in the afternoon. Our enthusiastic squad this year consisted of: two U19 boys teams, one U19 girls team, two U16 boys teams, one U16 girls team, one U16 individual and six individual swimmers.
