Oil and Grease Trap (Skimming Tank) As shown in figure 5.

17, oil and grease traps are small size skimming basins provided to remove oil and grease and other small floating materials such as fats, vegetable debris, fruit skins, etc. Normally, they are located ahead of PST to protect pumps and downstream treatment components. it is so designed the lighter materials like grease and oil content of wastewater rise to the surface of wastewater and remains on top of liquid until removed. The treated liquid flows out through the outlets provided below the water line

Design Criteria Normally, oil and grease traps are designed on the basis of the detention time and surface area consideration as given below : Detention time : 3-30 min. Surface area: 250 m2/m3 flow

Design Example Design examples of oil and grease traps are very simple and just require sizing of the tank as illustrated through Example 5.13 Example 5.13 Design an oil and grease trap to remove 160 mg/L of oil and grease from a flow of 50000 m3/d of domestic wastewater. Solution: a. Compute the volume of the tank Let us assume detention time, t is 5.0 minutes. Therefore, the volume of the tank

( )

b. Compute the surface area of the tank Assuming 250 m2 surface area for the wastewater flow of 1m3/s, the surface area of the tank ( ( ) ) ( )

c. Determine the depth of the tank The effective depth is

Providing a freeboard of 0.3 m the depth is 1.2 +0.3 = 1.5 m So, the overall dimensions of the tank will be 18 m x 8 m x 1.5 m
