Abidjan Water Tower Ivory Coast

Lifting a 5,000m3 capacity tank

View of the platform during the lifting process, installation of post-tensioning cables

Abidjan, Cte dIvoires largest city, requires some 500,000m3 of water a day but only 350,000m3 have been available, which has meant that 300,000 people have had no water from the citys central supply. The Ministry of Ivory Coast has launched a project to provide drinking water to la Djibi, the upper part of Abidjan.

At least two to three water towers have been required to pump water from underground, raise it and distribute it to the ever-growing number of residences. VSL Heavy Lifting was awarded the lifting lifti contract for the 5,000m3 t t f th 5 000 3 capacity tank as well as the task of fixing it into its final position by posttensioning with compacted strands. VSL lifted the 2,700t storage tank to a height of 35m using 12 SLU 330 jacks, which were equally distributed around the shaft shaft.

Every element necessary for the lifting, post-tensioning and grouting had to be installed at ground level prior to the lift.

General view of the New tower and Ground formwork

Each lifting cable was designed as part of the permanent works and therefore all the lower anchorages had to be embedded prior to lifting. Once in the final position, 18 additional post tensioning cables post-tensioning were stressed to fix the bowl. The 12 lifting cables could then be released and converted to serve as post-tensioning cables.
The tendons were grouted.

The successful operation was the result of the close cooperation between the French main contractor Franzetti, VSL Heavy Lifting and the VSL Technical Centre in Europe. The local authorities were very satisfied with the results and convinced by the approach. They are planning on building subsequent water towers using the same efficient method.
The heavy lifting cables were converted to become post-tensioning.
