Dr. Van Oort discusses medieval controversies about dance and the men and women who performed it. Dance was a lively part of medieval festivities and people danced to celebrate weddings, harvests and the feast days of saints. In the visions of the mystics, Christ and the angels also danced. However, not everyone approved and the arguments over whether dance was an expression of sinful frivolity or sacred joy went on for centuries and still echo today. If time allows, Dr. Van Oort would like to teach willing audience members a simple medieval circle dance after the presentation.
