ANC 6D Resolution in Support of Adding an Additional Capital Bikeshare Station at the 1st and K Streets SE Intersection in the Near

Southeast Neighborhood

WHEREAS; Near Southeast is located in the southeastern corner of the southern half of Ward Six; WHEREAS; all of the current completed residential development in Near Southeast, comprising approximately 3,500 residents, is located north of M Street SE; WHEREAS; M Street SE is a high-speed and high-traffic commercial corridor that has yet to receive redesign appropriate for long-term pedestrian and bicycle safety and viability as a multi-modal transportation corridor; WHEREAS; the intersection of 1st and K Streets SE is central to the highest density of multifamily residential buildings in Near Southeast (Jefferson at Capitol Yards, Axiom at Capitol Yards, 909 New Jersey Avenue, Velocity condominium, The Onyx, and Capitol Hill Tower); WHEREAS; both of the existing Capital Bikeshare stations now located in Near Southeast are located south of M Street SE, away from the current population of Near Southeast residents; WHEREAS; the vast majority of Capital Bikeshare stations in the District of Columbia are located north of Near Southeast, therefore forcing residents to travel out of the way of both their homes and destinations while using the current Near Southeast Capital Bikeshare stations; WHEREAS; The District of Columbia Department of Transportation has announced plans to add an additional 32 Capital Bikeshare stations to the system this fall, as well as an additional 50 stations in early 2012; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED; that ANC 6D supports the addition of a new Capital Bikeshare station at the intersection of 1st and K Streets SE, and asks that the District of Columbia Department of Transportation add a new Capital Bikeshare station at the intersection of 1st and K Streets SE during this significant current expansion of the Capital Bikeshare system.
