WHAT IS GOAL SETTING?

Goal setting is a formal process during which you define targets


that you plan to achieve

When you set goals, you commit to outcomes that you can
accomplish personally or through your team

Goal setting creates a long-term vision for you & your team, and
provides the motivation to get you there

It has the additional benefit of helping you decide how you want to
focus your resources and time

 Goal setting includes:

 Aligning goals with overall organizational objectives

 Formulating and communicating SMART goals to employees

 Ensuring that goals are stretched yet achievable

 Providing the resources required and understanding the constraints


involved

 SMART Goals are built around 5 leading measures:

 Specific

 Measurable

 Attainable

 Relevant

 Time Bound

HOW TO MAKE A SMART GOAL?
 Any generic goal can be converted into a SMART goal by
following the format below:

 “WHO is going to do WHAT, WHEN, and TO WHAT


STANDARD?”

 In other words…

What is to be done?
 Who is going to do it?
 By when?
 To what standard?

EXAMPLE 1 OF
SMART GOAL FORMULATION
 Convert the following goal into a SMART goal:

“Pakistani children must be educated ”

One version could be…

“The Federal Education Ministry will ensure that by the end of


year 2008, 80% of children below the age of 12 receive primary
level education (as defined by the Cambridge board )”

 Does this follow the format outlined before?

basis

HOW TO MONITOR SMART GOALS?

 Revise completion dates, when necessary

 Record actual completion dates for future reference if


you change the dates originally committed to

 Review the impact on later tasks, and adjust those


accordingly
