Different Equations for Lines

• y = mx + b Slope-Intercept Form

• Ax + By = C Standard Form
or
Ax + By + C = 0
So, if an equation can be written in
any of these forms, then it
represents a line. It is called a linear
function.
Examples of Linear Functions

3x + 4y = 2
y = -3x – 10

Graphs of Linear Functions

• By making a table of
values
• By using the slope,
m, and y-intercept, b
• By using the x- and
y-intercepts
• By using your
graphing calculator
Using a Table
• Make a table of values
using x = -3, -2, -1, 0, Example:
1, 2, 3 y = 2x - 1
(If these values don’t
give you a good graph,
x y x y
add more random x
values) 0
-3
• Use the equation to 1
calculate the y-values -2
• Then, graph your -1 2
coordinates 3
y = 2x - 1

x y = 2x – 1 y
-3 2(-3) – 1 -7 10

-2 2(-2) – 1 -5 6

-1 2(-1) – 1 -3 2

Using the Slope, m, and y-intercept, b

• Transform the equation Example:

so that it is in slope-
intercept form
3
• Plot the y-intercept y  x 7
