Indices
An index arises when a number is multiplied by itself several times. Do not confuse with
the multiplication and additional of a number.
a n = a144
× a ×4
a2444
× a × ... ×3a
n times
na = a144
+ a +4a2444
+ a + ... +3a
n times
Laws of Indices:
Ø a m × a n = a m+ n Same base
m n m−n Different index
Ø a ÷a = a
n
Ø ( am ) = a mn

Ø ( ab ) = a nb n
Different base
n n
a a Same index
Ø = n
b b
Ø Zero index → a 0 = 1 , a ≠ 0

1 m m
Ø Fractional index → a n = n a ; a n = ( a)n

Logarithms
log a x = y Index
Laws of Logarithms
Ø log a xy = log a x + log a y
x
Ø log a = log a x − log a y
y
Ø log a x n = n log a x
Ø log a a = 1 If given log a x where 0 < x < 1 , negative
Ø log a 1 = 0 answer will obtain. This is very important
to solve logarithm inequalities.
Ø a loga x = x
Ø log a 0 = undefined
Ø log a ( negative ) = undefined
Example:
Evaluate
a. log a 3x d. log x x
3
b. log a e. log10 1
5
c. log a 36
Solution:
3
b. log a = log a 3 − log a 5 e. log10 1 = 0
5
c. log a 36 = log a 6 2
= 2 log a 6

Logarithm is actually an exponent. It is similar to index. Let’s look at the example below.
Index Logarithm
x = ay log a x = y
Example: Example:
If both index and logarithm are in the function form, then the relation between index and
logarithm is “function log a x is the inverse of function a y ”.
