Parashah 35 Nasso
Last week we started the Book of Numbers and spent some time looking at
what it means to travel through the Wilderness or Desert. When Israel
entered Egypt in the time of Joseph, they were 70 souls. Then they were
counted just as they left Egypt and was about 600,000 men. The time after
that, they were counted in Exo 30, with the giving of half a shekel when the
Tabernacle was constructed. Then each Tribe was numbered in last weeks
Portion where they were set up as the Armies of YHVH, as they embarked
on their journey through the Wilderness. The name of this Torah portion is
naso that means to take or elevate and that is to take a census,
counting the Levites, revealing the people behind the scenes who took care
of the logistics of the Tabernacle, as they travelled through the Wilderness.
So we are still counting, but in this Torah Portion, we will take a more detail
look at Levi, the Tribe that keeps the Camp or Headquarters in place, while
the other 12 Tribes do battle in the Wilderness.
www.hasophim.com 1
Num 4:1 Then YHVH spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 Take a census of
the sons of Kohath from among the children of Levi, by their families, by their
fathers house, 3 from thirty years old and above, even to fifty years old, all
who enter the service to do the work in the Tabernacle of meeting.
Take a census is the Hebrew phrase again, nasah rosh or lift up your
heads, this is the same phrase we looked at in the previous Torah Portion, but
this time, it applies to the three sons of Levi; Kohath, Gerson and Merari.
Gerson ]vsrg is the first son of Levi we will look at, and his name means
exile or a stranger here. Gersons job was to carry all the curtains that
covered the Outer Court, the Holy Place and Holy of Holies. Their number was
2630. Gerson comes from the root word garash that means to drive out, to
expel and to put away. This word is first found in Scripture in Gen 3:24 where
man or Adam was driven out of the Garden of Eden and Cherubims and
Flaming Sword kept and guarded the way to the Tree of Life.
Spiritual Application: The Curtains guarded the way to what was on the
inside of the Holy of Holies, the Holy place and the Inner
Court, just like the Cheribums and Flaming Sword guarded
the Tree of Life, the rest of the Garden and the entrance to
the Garden. The covering aspect of the curtains is similar to
the covering of the Shield that was revealed when YHVH
cut a Covenant with Abraham [Gen 15], where He said; I am
your Shield and your exceedingly great Reward. The
Coverings of the curtains, protected and formed the place
that contained the Presence of YHVH, Who is our
exceedingly great Reward. You will find the Reward inside
the Covering, Who is the Flaming Sword as well, the One
Who is the Shield, namely Yshua the Messiah.
www.hasophim.com 2
Gematria: Gersons number was 2630 and consists of the numbers 26 and 30
or 3 that means Covenant. The number 26 represents the
name of YHVH that adds up to 26 as well. It also accounts
for a cube that has 26 attributes, counting all the sides,
corners and surfaces. The Holy of Holies is a cube that
housed the Presence of YHVH. The New Jerusalem will be
a cube where YHVH will dwell with His people forever. The
covering will be removed, just like the curtain of the Holy of
Holies has torn, that allowed access into the Presence of the Father. In the
same way, will our fleshly covering (body) be removed, that will allow us
access to the direct presence of the Father, where we can exist in His Holy
Presence because we are in Covenant with Him.
Merari yrrm is the next son of Levi and his name means bitter. The Merarites
job was to carry all the beams and pillars with silver sockets. Their number was
6200. Merari comes from the root word marar that means to make bitter, to
provoke and grieved. So when YHVH was provoked anger or is we grieve His
Spirit, then we make YHVH bitter or marar, that frequently results in a bitter
experience. This word is first found in Scripture in Gen 49:23 within the blessing
that was spoken over Joseph by his father Jacob, saying; The archers have
sorely grieved him and hated him and shot him. The Archers is the Hebrew
baal chets. Ba-al means master or to be married to and archer means,
wounded. It was the ones he was in covenant with that wounded him, that
grieved him and made him bitter.
Q Who was wounded by the ones he was in Covenant with?
Prophetic Application: The Merarites job was to carry all the
pillars and silver sockets. These were the heaviest parts of the
Tabernacle to carry and are the areas of the Tabernacle that
touched the earth, where the spiritual realm touched the physical
realm. The function of the pillars was to lift up and hold up the
curtains. These parts of the Tabernacle represents the pole or
stake Yshua had to carry for the sake of the people He was in
Covenant with, where He was lifted up, and everyone who
looked at Him and believed in Him, would receive healing and
salvation. Yshua was wounded and shot by the people He was
in Covenant with, even though He was married to them. His
death grieved the Father deeply but is the pinnacle event that
demonstrated His love for His people.
Personal Application: Merari represents the
bitterness of life, all the troubles you face and
experience living in this imperfect world. We all
have troubles, and we all must carry the heavy
load whenever we face difficulty in life. The
pillars represent the structure that upholds the
curtains and makes up the dwelling place for
YHVH as well as His Priesthood. These posts
represent the structure you need in your life that will uphold you when
thigs gets tough.
www.hasophim.com 3
We find mention of these pillars in Exo 17, where Mosess arms were held up
during the battle against Amalek. The word used for support is the word
amunah, that means pillar, support and faith. The word amunah comes
from the word aman that means Truth, which forms the basis for amunah or
faith. Knowing His Word allows releases faith in your life that gives you
something to lean on in times of testing, that we need to overcome when
marari or the bitterness of life presents itself. Merari represents your Mind
and your Soul, Word, Truth & Faith Relationship with Yshua.
Gematria: Marais number was 6200 that consists of the numbers 6 and 200.
The number 6 represents man, and the number 200 or 2 represents Restoration
of Relationships. Faith and Truth are the means to restore your relationship
back with the Father. Faith is based on Truth that is the Word or Torah, which
represents the Messiah as well. This means that your relationship with the Word
(Yshua) will determine your relationship with the Father.
Kohath thq, the next son of Levi, that means to call out, assembly, and to
ally oneself, or to become someone who supports
a cause. Their job was to carry and take care of
and the setting up of the Holy place and Holy of
Holies that housed all the furnishings; the Ark, the
Menorah, Altar of incense, Table of Showbread and
all its utensils. Their number was 2750.
Personal Application: These are the believers
who supports the cause and imply that the House
of YHVH is not a club for the use of spiritual entertainment. The House of YHVH
or Assembly is a place where you contribute your efforts to support the cause of
establishing YHVHs Kingdom here on earth. There are very strict requirements
carrying and setting up this part or the Tabernacle and teaches us that our
intimate relationship with the father requires strict guidelines and dedication,
and great care needs to be taken to maintain this relationship. Koath
represents your SpiritPersonal Relationship with the Father.
Spiritual Application: This son of Levi represents our spiritual internal
parts that furnishes the Tabernacle, within the Body of Messiah. Every
aspect of every piece of furniture and every utensil represents one of the
areas of the Body that is required to make it function so that it can manifest
the fullness and Presence of YHVH in the midst of the Assembly. The Body
of Messiah cannot be represented in only one person having it all, but will
only manifest through collaboration and unity of all the body parts within the
Assembly or Fellowship.
Gematria: Koaths number was 2750 that consists of the numbers 2, 7 and
50. The number 2 means Restoration of Relationships, 7
means Promises of YHVH and 50 or 5 means Grace. All the
furnishings inside the Tabernacle exists to complete the
House of YHVH to fulfil the Promises He made with man,
because of His Grace. The Promises of YHVH will not come
to pass without the House or Body of Messiah and requires
that there needs to be unity within the Assembly so that His
people can extend Grace to the world.

Carrying the Tabernacle
Num 4:17-19 Then YHVH spoke to Moses and
Aaron, saying: 18 Do not cut off the tribe of the
families of the Kohathites from among the Levites; 19
but do this in regard to them, that they may live and
not die when they approach the most holy things:
Aaron and his sons shall go in and appoint each of
them to his service and his burden.
Service is the Hebrew word avodah hdbi and is translated as, work,
bondage, service. It comes from the root word avad dbi that means, work,
servant, service and worshippers. All three these groups of Levites had to work
and carry something that collectively made up the Tabernacle of YHVH in their
midst. We read in Matt 11 where Yshua describes work or service unto Him, He
describes it as an easy Yoke that is carried, and a Burden that is light and
manageable.
Mat 11:28-30 Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest.29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I
am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.
Q - What is the work that YHVH wants you to do, what does it mean to carry a
yoke and a burden?
It is our jobs to discover the yoke and then to carry the yoke, walking in the
purpose He placed upon your life, one step at a time. We will now look at
different aspects of the yoke and how it is relevant to us as Believers labouring
for our Messiah.
Helping New Believers: The yoke is not the
heaviness of the Law like people tend to think, but it is
a yoke of purpose, and when you carry it, you will find
rest. When new people come in, they should not be
burdened with all the dos and donts, putting an
overwhelming burden upon them. They first, have to
settle in, find rest for their souls, so that restoration
and healing can take place before they are used in the Body. The next phase
after their full recovery is to take up His Yoke, finding out what His purpose is in
their life. His burden is easy, and His yoke is light, it will come naturally, and
they will want to carry this yoke. If you experience His yoke it as too heavy, you
might have taken on a yoke that is not yours, or you could have taken on a yoke
that is overloaded with man made traditions.
Learning their Purpose: Yshua was a Carpenter, and one of His jobs was
probably to make yokes. He is not only the One making the
yoke for the ox, but He is also the Creator Who made the ox
as well and understands the requirements to make a yoke
that suits the animal and fits the purpose. The Yoke Yshua
made you, is comfortable, sits well and has a purpose that
naturally suits you.
www.hasophim.com 5
You cannot ask for a better fit. You are created for a purpose, and that purpose
is the Yoke you carry so that you to can fulfil your destiny here on earth, about
carrying the Tabernacle. The Yoke is made for two to carry, you on the one side
and Yshua on the other, together carrying and pulling the load, helping you
every step of the way. This is the second reason for carrying the Yoke; to learn
from Yshua and to know Him. This means that His Yoke not only connects you
to your destiny but also connects you to Him. You do not have to worry about
how you will fit into the bigger picture, only take His Yoke upon your shoulders,
take one step at a time and keep on walking.
Warning to the Assembly: The phrase in Matt 11, you will find rest for your
souls, is an actual passage Yshua quoted from the Prophet
Jerimiah that relates to the end times.
Jer 6:16-19 Thus says YHVH: Stand in the (ancient) ways and
see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk
in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said,
We will not walk in it. 17 Also, I set watchmen over you, saying,
Listen to the sound of the trumpet! But they said, We will not
listen. 18 Therefore hear, you nations, And know, O
congregation, what is among them. 19 Hear, O earth! Behold, I
will certainly bring calamity on this people The fruit of their
thoughts, Because they have not heeded My words Nor My
Torah, but rejected it.
Yshua connect this Yoke to the ancient ways, to the old paths that are
confirmed in v 19 to be His Torah and His Word. This is not a new Way or new
revelation that leads to His rest, it is walking in His Torah, travelling on and
following the old path that leads to the place of rest, which is the Promised
Land. Verse 16 states that His people refused to walk in it, not heading to the
warnings of the watchman. Because of their stubbornness, He will bring
calamity upon the believers like this, upon His people who have access to His
Word but refuse to follow His Torah or ancient path. If they continue in their
new corrupt ways then they will not enter into His Rest.
www.hasophim.com 6
Personal Application: This is the Yoke you carry, is similar to the Yoke
Yshua carried as found in the Berit Chadasha (NT), where it says you need
to take up your stake (cross) and follow Him. This means to follow Him
even unto death. This Yoke represents your commitment, the first step you
take in following Him, where you die to yourself first, before you put on His
Yoke, walking in your destiny. Without this Yoke of commitment, you will
never be able to become like Him fully. Yoke of Dedication & Commitment.
Minor rvnm that means, beam or yoke. It comes from the root word ner
Ol li means upon and is found in Gen 27:40 where Isaac blessed Esau
saying that he will serve Jacob, but there comes a time when he will
break his yoke from his neck. The word ol is also found in the
word bel-e-yal, liylb that means, without a yoke. Deut 13:13
reveals the Sons of Belial who was bad because they brought in the
worship of false gods. We have mentioned again in the Berit
Chadashah (NT) in 2 Cor 6:15:
2 Cor 6:14-15 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For
what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what
communion has light with darkness? 15 And what unity has Messiah with
Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?
www.hasophim.com 7
Paul is addressing the Assembly in Corinth, teaching them on Holiness and to
be set apart, to be different from the unbelievers and not to be yoked to them.
Spiritual Application: This yoke represents the carrying of
the Torah in your life. Paul asked the question; what unity
does Yshua have with Belial or Yokeless people and what
fellowship is there between righteousness and lawlessness?
How many Believers today are addressed by the same
message from Paul, but they still walk like the Sons of Belial,
bringing in false worship and refuse to put on the Yoke of
Torah in their lives, saying the Law is abolished? The reason
we carry the Yoke of Torah on our lives is so that others can
see it and read the Torah on us without even noticing. It is similar to when
Moses carried the Commandments as he came down from the presence of
YHVH, people could physically see the Commandments. When you carry His
Commandments in your life, people will look at you and see YHVHs
Standards without you even uttering one word. Light makes no sound, it only
illuminates and reveals the hidden things of YHVH. We are lights of this
world.
This word for Yoke, ol makes the word Olah hli when adding a Hey.
The olah is the Elevation or Burnt offering, the offering that was the most
expensive of all the offerings because it was entirely consumed and no one ate
from it. This is what is what Paul meant in Rom 12, where he said we are to be
living sacrifices, we need to become olah offerings unto YHVH, giving
ourselves completely unto Him. Yoke of Torah.
Tsemed dmo that means to pair, couple, two animals yoked together and
acre. This word is used in Judges 19 where Levite
was travelling at the side of Mout Ephriam with his
Concubine, travelling to her fathers house. After
meeting up with him, their plan was to go back to
the House of YHVH, with a couple of asses
(tsemed) with them. Ass is the word chamor that
comes from the root word chamar that means to
be troubled or to be in turmoil. The story ends with
the Concubine being killed by the Sons of Belial,
the Yokeless, lawless ones from the Tribe of Benyamin.
Spiritual Application: The picture of two asses yoked together is an
indication of great turmoil, chaos and mayhem that came upon them because
of the Yoke that led them to the House of YHVH. The purpose of carrying this
Yoke is to lead theConcubine (new believers) to the House of YHVH, but
the yoke-less ones, the Sons of Belial, will try to stop you in achieving this
goal. The other insight here is that the opposition not only comes from people
in the world, but also from fellow believers (Benyamin). The Sons of Belial
are brothers and sisters in Messiah that are opposed to carrying the Yoke of
Torah, which is the ancient Way that leads to the House of YHVH. As a result
of this battle, the people we try to bring into the Kingdom will be killed in the
process, going back in the world and not wanting to have anything to do with
this confused faith they were trying to be part of. Yoke of Unity.

Nazarite Vow
The Nazarite vow was taken to separate yourself from
the world and commit yourself solely to YHVH for a
period.
It is the Hebrew word natziyr ryzn that means,
consecrated one or devoted one, and is first found in
Scripture in Gen 49:26 where Jacob blessed Joseph saying that the blessings
from YHVH has exceeded that of the blessings on his fathers, and will be like a
crown upon his head, to those who choose to separate (natziyr) themselves
form from their brethren. They were to:
separate him or herself unto YHVH for a period
abstain from drinking or eating anything from the vine during the vow
grow the hair long
stay away from dead bodies
Two places in the Berit Chadasha refers to the Nazarite Vow; the first was
where Paul the Apostle committed to taking the vow to proof to the Pharisees
that he is still obeying and following the Commandments and Torah.
Paul participated in a Nazarite vow: Paul was in Corinth coming from Athens
where he did that sound a bit strange to people who are not familiar with the
customs and Commandments in the Torah.
Act 18:18 And Paul having remained many days more, taking leave of
the brothers, he sailed from there into Syria. And Priscilla and Aquila
were with him. And Paul had shorn his head in Cenchrea, for he had a
vow.
Paul took a vow and shaved his head that is part of the Nazarite vow as
described in Numbers 6.
Num 6:4-8 All the days of his Nazariteship he shall eat nothing that is
made of the grapevine, from grape seeds even to a stem. (5) All the days
of his vow to separate, no razor shall come upon his head. Until all the
days are fulfilled in which he separates to YHVH, he shall be holy. He
shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. (6) All the days that he
separates to YHVH, he shall not come near any dead body. (7) He shall
not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, or for his
brother, or for his sister, when they die because his separation to his God
is upon his head. (8) All the days of his separation he is holy to YHVH.
They accused Paul falsely, accusing him of teaching the Jews not to observe
the Law of Moses.
Act 18:12-13 But Gallio being pro-consul of Achaia, the Jews with one
accord rushed against Paul and brought him to the judgment seat, (13)
saying, This one persuades men to worship Elohim contrary to the Torah.
Paul was accused of teaching the believing Jews not to keep the Law of Moses,
better known as the Torah, they accused him of teaching them not to circumcise
their children and not to walk after the customs as prescribed in the Law of
Moses.
www.hasophim.com 9
As a witness against these accusations, Paul and four men partook in the
Nazarite vow to prove that they did adhere to Torah and dedicated themselves
to YHVH, completely.
Act 21:20-24 And hearing, they glorified YHVH, and
said to him, You see, brother, how many thousands of
Jews there are who believe, and they are all zealous of
the Torah. (21) And they are informed concerning you
(Paul), that you teach all the Jews who are among the
nations to forsake Moses (Law of Moses Torah),
saying that they ought not to circumcise their children,
nor to walk after the customs. (22) What is it therefore? At all events a
multitude will come together, for they will hear that you have come. (23)
Therefore do this, what we say to you: We have four men who have a
vow on themselves;(Nazarite vow) (24) taking them, be purified with
them, and be at expense for them, so that they may shave their heads.
And all may know that what they have been told about you is nothing (a
lie), but you yourself also walk orderly and keep the Torah.
Act 21:26-27 Then taking the men on the next day, being purified with
them, Paul went into the Temple, declaring the fulfilment of the days of
the purification, until an offering should be offered for each of them. (27)
And when the seven days were about to be completed, the Jews who were
from Asia, having seen him in the Temple, stirred up all the crowd and
laid hands on him,
All these accusations were false because of them observing this Commanded in
the Torah. When they saw Paul fulfilling the Nazarite law of purification, bringing
the sacrifice, they stirred up the crowd with the news and laid hands on him and
wanted to kill him.
Be Filled with the Sprit: The second place it refers to one of the aspects of a
Nazarite Vow, is in Eph 5:18 where it says not to be drunk with wine, but to be
filled with YHVHs Spirit. Is this related to this Nazarite vow that points out to
your dedication and separation from the rest of the Believers, to commit yourself
to YHVH on a higher level? Looking at the blessing released over Joseph, it
makes it clear that those who separate themselves more than their brothers, will
receive a blessing greater than your fathers. Joseph represents the Believers
coming from the Nations through the Gospel message of Messiah Yshua. This
reveals to us that this blessing that now is upon these Believers in Messiah will
make his brothers jealous, just like the blessings upon Joseph provoked his
brothers to jealousy.
Q - What is this blessing that is greater than that of the fathers?
Receiving YHVH Spirit that will enable them to walk in His Ways and do the
same things Yshua did, reaching the nations for the Kingdom of YHVH.
Rom 11:11 I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly
not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has
come to the Gentiles.
It was possible for Paul to take a Nazarite Vow because the Temple still existed
in his day.
www.hasophim.com 10
Taking a Nazarite Vow
Q - How will it be possible for us to take this vow in the absence of the Temple?
If you think about it, Joseph was separate (naziyr) to his brothers, and this was
in the absence of the Temple. That makes it possible to follow the principles of
this Vow, applying the intent of this Commandment in your life.
Abstain from the fruit of the vine: Vine or wine is the Hebrew word yayin ]yy
that comes from an unused root meaning to effervesce - bubble, sparkle, hiss.
It was first used in Scripture in Gen 9:21 where Noah drank wine, that resulted
in uncovering his nakedness.
Spiritual Application: Nakedness is another way of
describing the weaknesses or shame of the flesh, that is sin.
To abstain from the fruit of the vine is to walk Holy unto
YHVH, disciplining and dedicating your body 100% unto
Him so that you will not sin. This will teach you to finish what
you have started and stay committed to the cause, serving
YHVH and broadening His Kingdom. Its all about
commitment and dedication.
Not cutting the hair: No razor shall come upon the head. Razor is the word ta-
ar rit that means, razor, to make naked, the sheath of a sword. It comes
from the root word arah hry that means to lay bear, to pour out, to empty. It
is first used in Scripture in Gen 24:20 where Rebeckah hurried to give water to
the Camels, that was the sign to the Servant that she is the Bride of Isaac.
Spiritual Application: Isaac represents Messiah and
Rebecca represents the Bride of Messiah, and the Servant
represents YHVHs Spirit. The sign that she was the Bride
was the fact that she hurried to give water to the camels.
She understood the importance of the life-giving water and
to give it timely when required. The Bride is someone who
emptied herself and be committed to the work of the
Kingdom, in sharing the Word of YHVH to the Nations.
Stay away from dead bodies: This commandment is found in Num 6:7 where
it states that he will not be in contact with the dead, not even family members,
because of the consecration of Elohim that is upon his head. Head is the word
rosh that means, head, leader, company, top, first. This is related to the
double portion or birthright that came upon the first born of the family that
gave him the authority and resources to act as the father or leader of the
household. Not only that, but he also had the obligation and responsibilities of
the Priest, taking care of the spiritual well-being of the family as well as to make
sure that the faith is preserved and transferred to the next generation.
Spiritual Application: This part of the Nazarite Vow reveals to us Spiritual
Leadership, abstaining from things in the world so that the faith can be
preserved and carried over to the next generation of new Believers. Your
responsibilities will be to protect and defend the Truth and make sure it is
taught and transferred to new Believers in its purest original form.
