Multimedia Project

Driving Question: How can we use multimedia in our research project
on famous (current) African Americans?
Overview: This multimedia project is a research-based project that is
designed to encourage Kindergarten students to use a variety of digital
resources to enhance their learning of famous present day African
Americans. Students will work on this project to extend both their
Language Arts and Social Studies skills. They will use books and online
resources to conduct their research and then will select a medium of
their choice for their presentation.
Phase One:
Topic: The students will conduct research-based projects on famous
present day African Americans. They will then choose from a variety of
mediums to create a presentation on what they have learned.
Already Know: The students will have prior knowledge about the
different ways that they can present their projectsthey will have used
iMovie, Aurasma, and Explain Everything. They will have prior
knowledge about using books and other sources to conduct research
about a persons life.
Research Questions:
o What modern day African American have you chosen to
research?
o What kinds of tools will you use to help you research the
person that you have chosen?
o What kind of project have you selected to create in order
to share what you have learned?
o How can we use books and websites to help learn
informatiob about a persons life?
Common Core Standards:
ELAGSEKRI3: With prompting and support, describe the connection
between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a
text.
ELAGSEKRI7: With prompting and support, describe the relationship
between illustrations and the text (how the illustrations support the
text).

ELAGSEKRI9: With prompting and support, identify basic similarities in

and differences between two texts on the same topic (e.g., in
illustrations, descriptions, or procedures).
ELAGSEKRI10: Actively engage in group reading of informational text
with purpose and understanding.
ELAGSEKW2: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to
compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they
are writing about and supply some information about the topic.
ELAGSEKW8: With guidance and support from adults, recall information
from experiences or gather information from provided sources to
answer a question.
ELAGSEKSL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse
partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in
small and larger groups.
ELAGSEKSL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as
desired to provide additional detail.
ELAGSEKSL6: Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas
clearly.
SSKG1: The student will describe American culture by explaining
diverse community and family celebrations and customs.
SSKCG2: The student will retell stories that illustrate positive character
traits and will explain how the people in the stories show the qualities
of honesty, patriotism, loyalty, courtesy, respect, truth, pride, selfcontrol, moderation, and accomplishment.
SSKH1: The student will identify the purpose of national holidays and
describe the people or events celebrated.
Phase Two:
The students will be working with a variety of resources in order
to help them with their project. I want to expose them to as many
resources as possible in order to help them sift through different
information to find out the truly important pieces that they would like
to share. We will talk about important leadership qualities within each
of the people as well. The students will be given a choice of five
different people that they would like to researchthey will select one
person and then use books and digital resources to learn more

information about that particular person. They will create a final project
to share what they have learned as well.

I will be using each of these websites to expose the children to the
variety of people that we will be studying. The majority of these
websites and videos will require adult assistance so I will be working
with the students in small groups as they interact with the websites
and videos. Throughout our time spent interacting with these websites
we will be evaluating them and talking about why they were made
(what their purpose is) together within our small groups.
Books:
Firebird by Misty Copeland
Henry Aarons Dream by Matt Tavares
Of Thee I Sing by Barack Obama
Salt in His Shoes: Michael Jordan in Pursuit of His Dreams by Deloris

Who Is Michelle Obama? By Megan Stine
We will be reading these books aloud as a whole group so that each of
the students will be exposed to more information about the lives of the

five people that we have decided to focus on. I will help the children
individually use the books to assist with their projects as well.
Phase Three:
The culminating part of this project will have several different
possibilities. The students will be given the choice of making a movie
(through iMovie), writing a story (through Explain Everything), and
creating a painting and then explaining what they have learned
(through Aurasma)each of these will be created on the iPad. I wanted
to leave the choice for the presentation medium up to the studentsI
think that this allows for a more creative presentation. I also think that
it would be nice to have a variety of presentations to display
throughout the classroom.

Evaluation
I will use a very basic rubric (since it is for Kindergarten students) to
evaluate my students on their presentations. They will be evaluated on
their commitment/thoroughness in research, the information that they
select to include in their presentation(at least 3 facts about the
person), and that they have used the multimedia/digital resources
correctly (with teacher guidance) to create a presentation. A sample
rubric is below:
