TonightPlease remember our FREE Parent Seminar tonight 7.30 9.00pm in the Southern Cross
Centre. Presented by highly regarded Dr Scott Burgess, paediatrician and Fiona Hudson, sleep
psychologist. It is common for children to have problems with their sleep. However, children who are
not having enough sleep or poor quality sleep may have problems with their attention, learning and
behaviour. Our school is hosting a free information night. Dr Scott Burgess, a paediatrician
specialising in sleep and Fiona Hudson, a children's sleep psychologist will lead an interactive session
on common problems in sleep. This will include a discussion about how much sleep children need
and practical advice on how to manage these problems. Please RSVP to the school office. Phone:

FROM THE STUDENT PROTECTION TEAM
Last week during Wellness Week, our students were introduced to the Buddy Bench. Situated outside
the Year 2 building, in between the two junior playgrounds, the buddy bench is designed as a meeting
point or a place for students to meet new friends. The way it works is students sit on the buddy bench
if they are alone, lost or looking to expand their friendship circle. Other students are then encouraged
to come to the bench and ask the student to play with them. Teachers will monitor this bench to
ensure it is used for the right purposes, but at this point we are getting used to the buddy bench and
all it has to offer. A special thank you to Len Moss for painting, decorating, erecting and situating the
bench for us and for the kind donation from the P&F.

GUIDANCE NEWS
EMOTIONAL TOOL KIT
What do you do when you are faced with an anxiety provoking situation?
Classically our body goes into a state of flight (run away; hide); fight (hit
out; use angry words) or freeze (shut down; withdraw) all of which can
be helpful if we are genuinely in danger as our body readies itself to
respond to the threat. However, we can also go into one of these states
by imagining we are at risk of harm when in fact we are safe. In the
chaotic state brought on by anxiety the body responds with such
symptoms as an increased heart rate, rapid breathing and trembling,
which can increase the anxiety to a level of panic.

The ability to be real in the present moment is a great way to reset our
nervous system, slow our breathing and calm our heart rate. Reset tool
number 1: Begin deep abdominal breathing; Reset tool number 2: be
present to the moment which is used even by the military when in a
potentially dangerous situation. To do this take in your present
surroundings and name 3 things you can see 3 things you can hear, 3
things you can touch, 3 things you can smell; then repeat naming 2 new
items for each category; repeat naming 1 new item and so on. If the high
anxiety continues, repeat the exercise. The information provided by your
senses will help ground you and refocus thinking.
