SPORTS CARNIVAL

Dear Parents, Friends & Students

In the coming weeks our school is required to lodge a projection of enrolment numbers for the
following year to Brisbane Catholic Education. As a school we need to be as accurate as possible
with these projections as they form the basis on which our staffing numbers are approved. Apart from
our current Year 6 students, if you know that your child/ren will not be returning to our school in 2017,
I would appreciate you letting us know this week. You can phone and speak to our enrolments officer
Nikki Lewis or simply send an email to [email protected] Thank You!
In the lead up to the Federal election on 2 July, its becoming clear that funding for non-government
schools is going to be a key issue, as is funding for education generally. Given that the continuing
viability of our Catholic schools depends upon government funding (predominantly from the Federal
government), it is important that we all have a clearer understanding regarding how our schools are
funded.
Today, and over the coming weeks I ask that you have a look at the attachments that are available
with our newsletter on the school website regarding the funding of our schools. These colourful
simple graphics have been produced by the National Catholic Education Commission and they clearly
state the real funding figures and emphasise the great work of our Catholic schools.

TonightPlease remember our FREE Parent Seminar tonight 7.30 9.00pm in the Southern Cross
Centre. Presented by highly regarded Dr Scott Burgess, paediatrician and Fiona Hudson, sleep
psychologist. It is common for children to have problems with their sleep. However, children who are
not having enough sleep or poor quality sleep may have problems with their attention, learning and
behaviour. Our school is hosting a free information night. Dr Scott Burgess, a paediatrician
specialising in sleep and Fiona Hudson, a children's sleep psychologist will lead an interactive session
on common problems in sleep. This will include a discussion about how much sleep children need
and practical advice on how to manage these problems. Please RSVP to the school office. Phone:
3822 5500 or [email protected]
FROM THE STUDENT PROTECTION TEAM

NARELLE OLIVER AUTHOR

VISIT

Last week during Wellness Week, our students were introduced to the Buddy Bench. Situated outside
the Year 2 building, in between the two junior playgrounds, the buddy bench is designed as a meeting
point or a place for students to meet new friends. The way it works is students sit on the buddy bench
if they are alone, lost or looking to expand their friendship circle. Other students are then encouraged
to come to the bench and ask the student to play with them. Teachers will monitor this bench to
ensure it is used for the right purposes, but at this point we are getting used to the buddy bench and
all it has to offer. A special thank you to Len Moss for painting, decorating, erecting and situating the
bench for us and for the kind donation from the P&F.

CELEBRATION OF LEARNING YEARS 3-6

It was wonderful on Friday morning to see so many of our parents
spending time with their children in classrooms. Our Year 3-6
classrooms were certainly buzzing with excitement as the children
proudly shared their wonderful learning and the products of all of their
hard work this Semester. The opportunity to spend time with your child
discussing their learning is so very important. It is through the sharing of
our learning that we are able to deepen our understanding and help
others to grow in their knowledge also. As I went from room to room I
was certainly impressed by the breadth and depth of quality learning
experiences which happen at our school on a daily basis. Thank you all
for coming along and helping to celebrate learning at St Mary MacKillop
School.
INCURSIONS AND EXCURSIONS
This week is again another busy week here in the life of our school. All
children in the school have had the opportunity to spend time with
Narelle Oliver, a very gifted teacher, author and illustrator. These
workshops were certainly very engaging, informative and educational
experiences. Today our Year One students were visited by the local fire
department. This visit helps to address an aspect of the Year One
Health Curriculum where students need to: select and apply strategies to
keep themselves healthy and safe. On Thursday our Year Three
students head off to Kindilan Outdoor Education and Conference Centre
at Redland Bay. This is a day of learning and challenges. Children are
involved in physical education activities which promote the development
of their personal and social capabilities as they are challenged to work
together in teams to achieve certain tasks. The outdoor environment
also provides time for the children to work as scientists identifying and
classifying critters in the local creek.
TEACHER MODERATION
Over the last two weeks teachers have been meeting in year level teams
with Lisa Fletcher (Primary Learning Leader) to review current data on
student achievement and share samples of work used for assessment
purposes. These meetings have been a valuable way to build
consistency and enhance understanding of assessment practices across
our school.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION VALIDATION

Next Tuesday our RE Implementation Team will gather at the OShea
Centre to present our Religious Education program for validation by peer
schools and BCE Religious Education Officers. I thank Mr Spillane, Mr
Burke, Mrs Hyde and Mrs Alexander for taking time from their busy
schedules to assist with the preparation and presentation of our school
program. Once our school program has been validated it will be made
available to the public via our website.
SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM
On Sunday 22nd May many of our Year Four students continued their
journey through the sacramental program with a workshop focussed on
the Sacrament of Eucharist. The children received first communion last
weekend. Please keep the candidates and their families in your prayers
as they journey in preparation towards the reception of this Confirmation
next term.

FOCUS ON GRATITUDE 2016 VALUE
Today is a hunt for delight. Find at least 10 things that are tiny but that
can delight you if you pay attention to them. Things that could easily be
missed.

PARISH NEWS

These might be things like:

dust mites visible in sunlight,

a strangers smile,
the sound of a childs laughter,
a leaf,
the smell of fresh laundry,
a comfortable seat,
a well designed machine,
the colour of your car,
the feel of the wind,
a song on the radio..

When you notice them take a minute to really experience it. If you have
children... they may like to hunt for delight as well. Wake up, see,
savour.

The 2016 Premiers Reading Challenge has begun. It is an annual

statewide initiative for students up to Year 9. It aims to improve literacy
and encourage children to engage in reading for pleasure and learning.
The reading period for Prep to Year 6 students is 16 May - 26 August
2016. For a student to successfully complete the Premier's Reading
Challenge they must read or experience the number of books indicated
in the table below. Experiencing a book can include classroom or at
home activities such as shared reading, listening and reading along with
a book, or being read to. Students who complete the challenge receive a
Certificate of Achievement signed by the Qld
Premier.

More than 50 students competed at last weeks Bayside Catholic

Cross Country Carnival. It was a great day and a reward for all the
hard work put into training. Our students all ran out their races well
proving that hard work and persistence will help you to achieve your
goals. Mary MacKillop won the Junior Girls Trophy and came
second overall. We would like to congratulate all students for their
efforts but a special mention must go to Lucan La Rosa (1st place),
Blake Brown, Kayla Chadwick and Callum Brennan (2nd place),
Taylah Hazell and Millie Bailey (3rd place) and Jasmine OConnell
and Erica Polak (4th place) in their respective races.
This brings an end to cross country training for the year. Athletics
training will begin in the second week of term 3. It will again be open for
any student who wishes to attend. More information will appear in the
newsletter prior to its commencement.

The class that reads the highest percentage of

books will be awarded with a pizza party
supplied by the library. Each student has been
provided with an individual reader record form
and a bookmark to help him or her keep track
of books read. Extra reading forms are

Could all Athletics singlets please be returned as soon as possible?

Could they be returned in a bag that is marked with your child's name
and placed in the box at the entrance to the sports shed. This will allow
me to keep track of missing singlets as these are costly items to replace.
Our second carnival day for years 5-6 also took place last week. Our
students had a great day completing in their teams against other schools
in our cluster. They are to be congratulated for their efforts and good
sportsmanship. A special mention goes to our Junior A and B netball
teams, our Senior B netball team, our Senior Girls touch team and our
Junior Mixed touch team who won their competitions

GUIDANCE NEWS
EMOTIONAL TOOL KIT
What do you do when you are faced with an anxiety provoking situation?
Classically our body goes into a state of flight (run away; hide); fight (hit
out; use angry words) or freeze (shut down; withdraw) all of which can
be helpful if we are genuinely in danger as our body readies itself to
respond to the threat. However, we can also go into one of these states
by imagining we are at risk of harm when in fact we are safe. In the
chaotic state brought on by anxiety the body responds with such
symptoms as an increased heart rate, rapid breathing and trembling,
which can increase the anxiety to a level of panic.

The ability to be real in the present moment is a great way to reset our
nervous system, slow our breathing and calm our heart rate. Reset tool
number 1: Begin deep abdominal breathing; Reset tool number 2: be
present to the moment which is used even by the military when in a
potentially dangerous situation. To do this take in your present
surroundings and name 3 things you can see 3 things you can hear, 3
things you can touch, 3 things you can smell; then repeat naming 2 new
items for each category; repeat naming 1 new item and so on. If the high
anxiety continues, repeat the exercise. The information provided by your
senses will help ground you and refocus thinking.
