Sioux

Jacob Vaughn, Grace Broyhill, Cody May, Andrew Voelker, Melanie

Lloyd, Kyle Ritchie

Location
Mostly lived in the great plains of Iowa,
Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska,
North and South Dakota
Tribal territories spread across North and
South Dakota

Governmental Structure

The tribes were made of many villages and each tribe had a council.
Each tribe had a chief and the jobs were given to smaller groups of people,
they did this so that one group does not have to much power.
The top council was the Seven Fires Council and they made all the decisions
for the Sioux Nation.
The Seven Fires Council was made up of all 7 tribe leaders
Today they live on reservations and each reservation has its own Tribal
Council.
The council chairperson has a similar job as the chiefs olden times and they
also help make decisions for all of the Sioux People.

US government relationship
The Sioux relations with the US government was a bumpy ride. Since the end of
the war of 1812, the sioux were split by loyalty for the british and loyalty for the
US. This lead to the us making treaties to win over the british side. One treaty
was the Sioux treaty of 1876, which gave them a nice reservation of land called
black hill. At least until us soldiers showed up and fought with the Sioux until
they confiscated it a year later, and the land is still up for debate.

Religious Beliefs

Slide 1 of 2

They believed that animals, plants and humans all came from one source:
Mother Earth. They also believed that although each creature, including humans,
had its own spirit, or "wakan," this spirit came from one universal source: the
Great Spirit, or Wakan Tanka. Wakan Tanka is manifest in every aspect of the
universe.

Wakan Tanka, Great Mystery, teach me

how to trust my heart, my mind, my
intuition, my inner knowing, the senses of
my body, the blessings of my spirit.
Teach me to trust these things so that I
may enter my Sacred Space and love
beyond my fear, and thus Walk in
Balance with the passing of each
glorious Sun. According to the Native
People, the Sacred Space is the space
between exhalation and inhalation. To
Walk in Balance is to have Heaven
(spirituality) and Earth (physicality) in
Harmony.
