Improvements Throughout my English Writing Skills
Writing is something that has always been an issue in my life. I do enjoy writing as long
as its not academic topics such as research papers. If I am assigned to write about an event in my
life or tell a story I get interested and makes it easier for me to give my clear thoughts and
opinions, as long as the guidelines arent too strict Im up for it. Ever since I started college I
have had difficulties keeping up with the requirements, and being able to write my clear ideas on
paper. Requirements are nothing compare to essays that were assigned to me during high school,
being assigned a five or more pages essay is nothing to what I was used to writing. From the
beginning I walked into the classroom I knew I had to study twice as hard, I had to achieved my
goals, and improve my writing and speaking skills.
During this semester I have learned multiple things in my class of English 113B. I have
learned different writing techniques, different forms of MLA formatting, being able to include
other peoples perspectives and how to find and properly use different sources. Although, I have
learned variety of things, when it comes to my skills for writing I still need improvement, for
example, grammar and being able to provide a clear thesis is still a problem for me. Giving a
clear thesis has been my weakness throughout my previous essays. Whenever a classmate or
anyone else revised my essay the negative comments were regarding how unclear my thesis

statement was. I am in understanding that this is one of the most important aspect in writing
without a strong thesis it is impossible to be clear on what your writing would be about. This was
one of the problems I faced while writing the second argumentative essay. This assignment was
difficult at first because I wasnt quite sure what to write or even how to write a clear
understandable argument. I tried reading the samples we were given to us by the professor but
they were not of much help. I also noticed it was impossible for me to explain myself to what I
wanted to write, I asked some of my classmates for help but I still face complications while
writing it. Even though I still have areas that need improvement, I was able to improve some of
the other areas of my writing skills. For example, my thoughts are now more complex because I
have learned how to sustain a logical argument in an organized manner. Another improvement is
my ability to point out multiple complexities within a text instead of sticking to one sided
arguments in my papers as well as learning to use a brainstorming process. With this I have been
able to show improvement throughout my recent work.
One thing I am not looking forward on taking is the UDWPE, the reason that I am the
kind of person who does a terrible job when having to work under time. I feel like I am more
capable to do a much better job if I am giving time to come up with my thought and ideas. Since
I do not feel prepared I will take time to practice as much as I can. I will absolutely take in
consideration all of the thing that I have learned through English 113B course. One of the
resources I have in mind to use is the book They Say I Say, in my opinion it has resourceful
information that can help me with my writing skills just like it was helpful throughout this
semester. This book has plenty of example in has articles on how to annotate, summarize, and
quote. In order to feel prepared I will continue to study and focus on setting my Ideas just like

our instructor from Supplemental Instruction class recommended we should do at the time of
taking our test.
At first it was challenging to take that initial step past the high school, five paragraph
essay form that constricted my ideas for so long. Moving past this form, however, has greatly
opened my mind. My thoughts are now able to be more complex because I have learned how to
sustain a logical argument in an organized manner. Of course, I learned about MLA
documentation and citing, which was originally very confusing but now makes more sense. I also
learn new writing process, especially the various brainstorming and prewriting techniques, for
the first time. Before, I would just start writing and then go back and edit or rearrange my essay,
but this semester I actually planned out all of my essays before I started to write them, and I
think using that process made it much easier for me to write and made all my essays more solid. I
have succeeded and been able to keep up with the requirement our professor had asked from us.
Not only have I managed strategies but I had received a great amount of help with my writing
because whenever I am having difficulties and my strategies are not working and Im in need of
help I had gone to writing lab where they support me with new ideas or make corrections to my
grammar issues. I still face some difficulties when having to come up with thesis but I will not
forget what was taught to me and will continue to use the strategies that were provided by my
professor. I can say I had achieved my goals and have made improvement with my writing.
