Chapter 7.4: Clinch/Takedowns

Technique: Double Leg Counter
Overview
In order to become a takedown specialist, you must also master your takedown defense strategies. In this lesson, we introduce you
to the quintessential Double Leg Takedown defense strategy, the sprawl. First you will learn the mechanics of the technique in a solo
preparation drill, and then we will teach you how to neutralize the Double Leg Takedown at a variety of intensity levels. Only once you
fully understand what it takes to stop the Double Leg Takedown, will you fully understand what must be done to execute it successfully.
Technical Slices
1) Solo Sprawl (Preparation Drill)
Essential Detail: Getting both legs back as fast as possible.
Most Common Mistake: Failure to drop the hips quickly.
Bad Guy Reminder: Watch your partner to verify correctness.
Drill Orders: Four solo sprawls, reverse roles.
2) Sprawl and Spin
Indicator: Opponent shoots in for a Double Leg Takedown.
Essential Detail: Trust all your weight on their back and sprawl relentlessly.
Most Common Mistake: Failure to insist on the sprawl if the shot is successful.
Bad Guy Reminder: Shoot the double at various speeds to ensure reflex development.
Drill Orders: Two reps, early and late sprawls, reverse roles.
Rapid Mastery Drill: Level 2
Practice all variations of the newly learned techniques against a Level 2 (Skilled) opponent. Your partner should begin with manageable
speed and intensity, and then gradually increase as your confidence and reflexes grow.
Focus Sparring: Ping Pong Sparring
Start standing and flow freely with the objective of bouncing back and forth with submissions: you win one, they win one, you win one,
etc. After each submission, keep flowing from that position and every few minutes make sure to get back to your feet to incorporate the
standing techniques.
Mindset Minute
The fact that you understand the science behind how, why, and when to sprawl, is absolutely no guarantee that your reflexes will be
sharp enough to neutralize a surprise takedown from a skilled opponent. Sprawling, like every technique, is something that needs to be
practiced at various levels of intensity until it can be executed in battle without conscious thought.
