LESSON PLAN FORMAT

Teacher Candidate: Jordan Lundmark

Grade Level: 5th

Title: Science Experiment- Paper Airplanes (Engage)

Date:

I.

Objectives
Know: Students will know that different variables (design, way you
throw, who throws) can affect the distance the airplane travels.
Understand: Students will understand that variables have an effect on
distance.
Do: Students will create their own airplanes, throw them outside or in the
gym, and try to determine what affected their distance.

List national, state, or local objectives, if possible.

1 5.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific reasoning,
logic, and the nature of science by planning and conducting investigations
in which:
E. Independent and dependent variables are identified.

Procedures for Learning Activities

Introduction (5mins)
1. Tell students that today we are going to make paper airplanes and fly them
either outside or in the gym and see whose plane goes the furthest.
2. Students can make any type of plane they want (design).
3. Students will work in pairs.
Instructional strategies (10-15mins)
1. Students will begin creating their paper airplanes in pairs. (5mins)
2. We will then go outside or in the gym and allow the students to throw their
paper airplanes and see what happens.
We will not be measuring the distance of these paper airplanes
because the point of this lesson is to get the students interested and
thinking about the different variables that can affect the distance an
airplane can travel.
Summary
1. To close this lesson we will discuss the independent variables (things that
differed from plane to plane) and the dependent variable (distance
traveled) due to the IV.
Students will talk with a partner and then a few will share whole
class.

IV.

Describe extensions or connections to other lessons.

1. Either the following day or later that day students will begin an
experiment where they will have a control airplane and then make one
change (independent variable) to the airplane and see how that affects the
distance the airplane travels.

Assessment

Teacher will ask and listen to students discuss what they think the
independent and dependent variables were for this experiment.

V.

Differentiation
Hands on experiment for students who are kinesthetic learners.
Students are able to make the airplane however they would like, no
restrictions.

Technology Integration
