Insert fire key and


turn to "ON"
Press desired button

"DOOR CLOSE" button

To open poweroperated door

To hold car at floor

Turn key to "HOLD"

Establish contact with trapped passengers


Locate and gain access to elevator machine room
Locate and shut off Main Line Power

Open hatch doors and gate with car at lowest level sitting on butlers
Leave car shutdown at lowest level
Have building notify elevator company

Establish contact with trapped passengers


Locate and gain access to elevator machine room
Locate and shut off Main Line Power
Remove passenger from disabled elevator with keyhole access,
if within 3 ft of landing up or down

Use of Car Top Escape Hatch for Rescue

Unlock and open car top escape hatch


Remove drop ceiling section, if equipped as so
Remove passenger with secured ladder from elevator cab and
from car top area

Multiple Cars in Hoistway

Leapfrog Removal Method

When Keyholes are NOT present at each floor.....

Use running elevator

to travel to floor closest to disabled elevator

With 1011 long section of conduit pipe, reach between hatch doors to release
door lock of disabled elevator.

"Car Gate Restrictor" A17.1 Sec 2.12.5 2007
Required in code since 1984
Restricts opening of car gate (inner door) and hoistway (outer
doors) when car is out of unlocking zone
Maximum allowed opening is 4 Once outer doors are opened by rescue responders car gate is to be
able to opened without tools
Restrictors can be of electric mechanical design or mechanical only
Restrictor will need to be disarmed to open some gates to rescue

Machine Room Less Elevators "MRL"


Allowed by code since 2004
Allows for hoist machine to be in hoistway
Allows for controller to be in control room in building, could be on
lower floor away from shaft
Some MRL type machines are still installed in conventional
machine room applications
For fire fighting purposes machine in hoistway is somewhat
inaccessible
MRL machines have brake override feature to lower or raise car,
depending on its location in shaft located in control room on
controller
Recommend requesting training from elevator company to operate
emergency brake release
