Assignment 1
1. In a production turning operation, the foreman has decided that a single pass must be
completed on a cylindrical workpiece in 5.0 min. The piece is 400mm long and
150mm in diameter. Using a feed = 0.3 mm/rev and a depth of cut = 4.0 mm, what
cutting speed must be used to meet this machining time requirement?
2. The length of the work is 200mm, the amount of taper is 1:50, find the set over (of
tailstock) required for taper turning.
3. Determine the angle at which the compound rest will be swivelled when cutting a
taper on a piece of work having the following dimensions: OD=60mm, length of
tapered portion=80mm, smaller dia on the tapered end of rod=20mm.
4. A shaft 1200 mm long has a taper of 1:200 for a length of 600mm. The maximum
diameter of shaft is75mm. Determine the minimum diameter and the amount of
tailstock setover for taper turning.
5. In a turning operation on SS with specific cutting energy 2.8 J/mm3, the cutting speed
= 200m/min, feed=0.25mm/min and depth of cut=7.5mm. How much power will the
lathe draw in performing this operation if its mechanical efficiency=90%.
6. In an orthogonal cutting operation, the following data have been observed:
Uncut chip thickness t=0.127mm
Width of cut b = 6.35mm
Cutting speed V=2m/s
Rake angle = 10
Cutting force Fc = 567N
Thrust force Ft = 227N
Chip thickness tc = 0.228mm
Determine: shear angle, friction angle, shear stress along shear plane, power for the
cutting operation.
7. A series of tool life tests is conducted on two work materials under identical cutting
conditions, varying only speed in the test procedure. The first material, defined as the
base material, yields the Taylors tool life equation
V T0.28 = 1050
and the other material (test material) yields the Taylor equation
v T0.27 = 1320
Determine the machinability rating of the test material using the cutting speed that
provides a 60 min. tool life as the basis of comparison. This speed is denoted by v60 .
