Recognize Perspectives

Change Project Draft:

The change project allowed me the opportunity to find
problems in my community and take action to make a difference
Encouraged me to interact one on one with people of my
community.
Made me more insightful of the unique people that surround
me and where they come from.
Senior Seminar with Shaul M. Gabbay:
Listening to Gabbay talk about the history of the Middle East
gave me a deeper understanding of the Middle East and the conflicts that
exist there.
Caused me to reflect on what media in the US exposes and
all the propaganda that surrounds major conflicts .
Through this presentation I was inspired to learn more about
history and make a difference.
Cultural Autobiography:
Forced me to reflect on my self image and what I stand for.
Inspired me to learn more about my cultural identity and
what it truly means to be an African-American woman.
This project got me out of my comfort zone and forced me to
think about other's perspective , as well as the negative connotations of
my identity.
Coterie 100th Year Anniversary Pamphlet
Interacting with the many women of Coterie impacted the
way I think about myself as a Black woman and the role I play.
Allowed me the chance to speak in front of many elite
individuals of society.
Documents my commitment to learn more about people of
color and how we can be successful.

Investigate the World:

Experimental Passage-A Cultural Perspective:

After visiting the Navajo Nation I was focused on culture extinction and
preserving culture, in response I conducted a culture based passage. I created and
collected surveys on the culture variations at DCIS. Through the creation of a book was
able to contribute to the knowledge of the DCIS community by making myself and all
other participants aware that we as a group of individuals who pride ourselves on being
well informed about culture sometimes fail to acknowledge the diversity of the students
around us.
Summer Intensive:
The Summer intensive for the Building Bridges program forced me outside of my
comfort zone, helped me grow and change as an individual. Before participating in this
program I was careless in the way I responded to others feelings and did not focus
much on my own feelings. As a participant of the program I was given the opportunity to
learn how I could become a better listener and a problem solver. Additionally I was able
to participate in a workshop to help 10th graders reflect their thinking and ideas in a
positive way.

Change Project
After establishing a well thought out plan on how I could contribute to a
community I was a part of I was given the opportunity to implement change. For the
Change project I made others aware of my experience on the Navajo Reservation, the
traditions, beliefs and celebrations.

Communicate Ideas:
Self Intro in Japanese:

Learning how to introduce myself in Japanese at a more advanced level gave me the
confidence and strengthen my skills in being able to communicate with another in
Japanese thus being able to eliminate the language barrier when introducing myself and
starting a conversation.
Vocational School vs. College:
Conducting a passage on an unpopular topic challenged me to communicate in a clear
and effective manner because I was advocating for a nontraditional plan that opposed
college. In order to communicate effectively with my audience ( two college graduates
and a group of collegebound students) I had to present unusual eye-caching information
and give in depth explanations.
Cultural Autobiography:
For Cross- Cultures class we were assigned the task of identifying ourselves and taking
into account other views of ourselves. Communicating this information made me reflect
on my encounters with diverse groups of people and how who I am may or may not
affect who I am able to communicate with.
Decision Quality Final:
When making decisions it is important to acknowledge the perspectives of those who maybe
affected by my decision, the people who have invested in me, as well as my own personal
feelings. Communicating a problem and taking into account all these things are important when
being reflective and trying to communicate using the decision quality chart.
