Characteristics of Jazz
Music..
There are two basic elements that make
Jazz different to Classical music.
1) Rhythm - Classical music typically places
emphasis on the 1st and 3rd beats in the
bar, whereas.. Jazz the 2nd and 4th beats,
which creates Syncopation
2) Improvisation - It is a creative process
which requires the musician to compose
music on their instrument or singing that
has never been played or written down
before.
A brief history..
Jazz found its roots in the combination of
elements found in West Africa and European
music traditions.
Evolved from slave songs, spirituals ( religious
Black American folk songs) and brass band
music.
Originated in African American communities near
the beginning of the 20th century.
Jazz spread rapidly in the 1920s until it became
an influential art form across the globe.
