Vicki Roberts and Seanna Hyndman are grade 7 teachers in SD61. Vicki has
been teaching at middle school for 9 years. She is passionate about building
strong reading communities and inspiring students to connect and share their
life experiences through a love of literature.
Seanna has been teaching for 4 years. Her practice is centered on the
importance of relationships. She brings her belief in the transformative power
of literature to the classroom.
We know the best learning occurs in an environment of trust.
By exploring identity, students understand how their own identities are shaped
and how they impact the identities of others. This important exploration not
only empowers students, it also creates a community where all feel valued and
understood. Students can apply their understanding of identity to become
upstanding, engaged and thoughtful citizens.
Seanna and Vicki will show you how they used backward design, anchored in
assessment, to create and implement an impactful Language Arts unit.
Participants will take part in some of the unit activities, receive lesson plans and
learn about literature and professional resources they can use in their own
classrooms.

Introducing the Residential School Suitcase for K-8 (MORNING)

K-8
Brenda Pohl has been a Learning Support Teacher and Aboriginal Support
Teacher for 18 years. Digital storytelling was a primary focus of her masters
paper, as she examining Aboriginal student success in the public school system.
The Residential school suitcase contains books, artifacts and teacher guides and
information to support teaching of a unit about residential school. Information
will be shared about how to approach this subject with confidence and resect. I
will also share information about how to use the materials.
Storytelling Through Digital Literacy (AFTERNOON)

K-12
Brenda Pohl has been a Learning Support Teacher and Aboriginal Support
Teacher for 18 years. Digital storytelling was a primary focus of her masters
paper, as she examining Aboriginal student success in the public school system.
Learn how to use digital equipment to support student presentation of
knowledge and ability. Digital technology can be used to support all subject
areas, particularly those with written output concerns or difficulties. We use
power point, photo story and movie maker as our presenter tool. We will
provide some assessment tools for written output.

Teacher-Librarians
Aaron Mueller is a Teacher-Librarian at Parkland Secondary and a Sessional
Instructor with the UBC Teacher-Librarian Diploma.
A workshop for Teacher-Librarians from around the south island to get
together, sharing ideas, lessons, and stories of transitions. We will meet and
break apart into small groups based around levels, interests, and topics.

David Futter has been a teacher in the Greater Victoria School District for 21
years. Taught mainly the Intermediate years, and at Rockheights Middle School
since 1998. He has a MEd from SFU in Imaginative Education. He has been
involved with the Learning in Depth project since 2008 and was a contributor to
the Learning in Depth kit.
Imaginative Education is a new approach to education that effectively engages
students imaginations in learning. IE offers you a new understanding of how
knowledge grows in the mind, and how our imaginations work and change
during our lives. Learning in Depth is one of the programs based on IE
principles.
Achieving Excellence in Writing: Creative Writing (AFTERNOON)

Grade 2-10
Susan Augustyn is a popular Canadian workshop presenter with over fifteen
years of experience facilitating workshops. She has presented workshops in
schools and districts across the province. Reflecting her many years in the
classroom, Susan's workshops are interesting and practical. Susan shares her
passion for teaching writing with humour and insight.
The afternoon session will cover skills and structures for teaching narrative
stories, writing from pictures, and anecdotal compositions. In addition to
outlining and structuring paragraphs, stories, and compositions, skills for
creating a variety of sentence types and lengths will be taught. The stylistic
techniques covered, coupled with clear structures, ensure students writing
becomes interesting and more effective.
Achieving Excellence in Writing: Report Writing (MORNING)

Grade 2-10

schools and districts across the province. Reflecting her many years in the
classroom, Susan's workshops are interesting and practical. Susan shares her
passion for teaching writing with humour and insight.
The morning session will cover research reports from both single and multiple
sources. Ways to help students select relevant information, create and organize
an outline, and write effectively from the outline will be demonstrated. The
process, along with the note-taking template that is used, simplifies report
writing for students, engages them in critical thinking skills, and results in
excellent reports.
