School Belief:
The administration, staff, and parents of Dean Petersen Elementary School believe
that parent involvement leads to increased student achievement. We want parents to feel
welcomed at our school and actively participate in school programs.
1. This policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by Dean Petersen Elementary
School and the parents. Dean Petersen Elementary School will convene an annual
meeting, at a convenient time for parents, to evaluate this policy. This meeting will be
held on Wednesday, September 22, 2015.
2. The school invites all parents to be involved in the writing of the School Performance
Plan by having parent representatives on the School Leadership and Parent Leadership
Teams.
3. The Educational Involvement Accords are integrated into the registration process
through Infinite Campus. Parents must review Accords prior to completing their childs
registration. Administrators and teachers will have access to the Accords whenever
needed for parent/student conferences or other occasions.
4. Dean Petersen Elementary School, in order to build the schools and parents capacity
for strong performance will: 1. Provide families with information that builds a positive
home environment that supports learning. 2. Keep open lines of communication
between the school and the family, which includes but is not limited to phone calls,
report cards, conferences, and open house nights. 3. Encourage parents and others to
volunteer at school or in classrooms and attend student performances and other events.
4. Provide guidance for families in monitoring, assisting, and interacting with their own
children at home on learning activities that contribute to success. 5. Encourage families
and others in the community to hold participatory roles in parent-teacher-student
organizations and school committees. 6. Establish connections with agencies,
businesses, cultural groups, and community organizations that share responsibility for
young peoples education and their future success.
Dean Petersen Elementary School, in order to build the schools and parents capacity
for strong performance will: Provide assistance to parents of children served by the
school in understanding topics such as the Nevada Academic Content Standards, the
State and local academic assessments including alternate assessments, the States
proficiency targets, the schools curriculum, how to monitor their childs progress and
how to work with educators.
5. Parents are provided materials and receive training in literacy, math, and technology
during Academic Nights throughout the year to help improve student achievement.
Parents are invited to: Meet and Greet, held August 21, 2015; Parent Teacher
Conferences on December 14, 2015; Parent Forums; and other functions such as Pastries
for Parents, monthly Citizenship and Achievement Awards Assemblies held on the last
Friday of each month, etc. Parents are informed about activities and programs that are
offered at the school through monthly newsletters and each year our school provides
parents with a Student Handbook outlining all of our policies in both English and
Spanish.
.
6. Dean Petersen Elementary School will provide ongoing training for teachers and staff on
how to improve student success by involving families in the educational process.
Educating our staff on parent and family issues are also a part of our cultural
competency trainings.
7. All communication that goes out from the school to parents is delivered in a uniform
format and in a language that is understandable to parents.
8. Dean Petersen Elementary School, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinates
and integrates parent involvement programs and activities in our parent resource center
and with our ZOOM Reading Center and Pre-K programs in order to encourage and
support families more fully participating in the education of their children. We have
developed corporate partnerships with the following businesses and are thankful for the
much needed assistance they provide to our students and teachers: Three Square Food
Bank, Public Education Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Southern Nevada, Verve
Church, Sansone Companies, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada, and Wynn
Resorts Limited.
9. Open two-way communication happens between the school and our parents through
evaluations from parenting events, surveys, Family Nights, Pastries with Parents, Parent
Forums, and through formal and informal conversations between school and parents.
We welcome any comments and ideas parents may have as we work together for the
benefit of their child.
