Technology and Design January 22nd

What we did this week:

This week, we created Rescue Devices. One group designed and created a
rescue device and a second group created the container to use for rescuing
someone or picking up cargo. They had the same supplies even though they had
separate tasks. Each group was given 10 Popsicle sticks, 10 straws, 3 feet of
masking tape, 4 feet of string, 1 piece of construction paper and 5 rubber bands.
Each building task had its own requirements. The two groups then came together
and had to work together to attach the two devices and model a successful
rescue. I have uploaded pictures on my blog of the successful missions.
Thursday, we looked at different careers that are in the STEM field. The
careers we looked at were robotics technicians, geneticists, technological writers,
and cartographers.
If we have school on Friday, I plan on doing one last invention day. Students
will be given a set of materials that they will need to create the most innovative
invention using the materials. The class will vote on the invention they felt was the
most innovative.
Announcements:
Tomorrow is the last day of the quarter. My gradebook is closed, so the
grade that you see on Edline is the end of quarter grade for your child. All
assignments that were collected this week, will be on next quarters grade.
This is the last week your child is enrolled in Technology and Design.
Starting next week, they will be starting their new elective they signed up. I had
such a great time teaching this class. I hope they enjoyed it. Next year, there is
another version of this course that will offered. It is called, Sea Perch. The
official description of this course is: Students develop an understanding of the
cultural, social, economic, and political effects of the technology; the role of
society in the development and use of technology; and the influence technology on
history. Students use engineering design, troubleshooting, research and

development, invention and innovation, and experimentation in problem solving while

learning to use and maintain technological systems. Students will research, design,
construct, and test their sea perch device to solve a natural or manmade disaster.
This course will involve making an underwater robot and testing it out at Naval Sea
Systems Command in Carderock, MD. If you child is interested, look for this
course being offered during registration next month.
