Context
This
is
the
6th
class
in
the
transformation
of
matter
unit,
which
will
span
about
10
classes.
The
first
half
of
this
unit
focused
on
the
kinds
of
transformations
matter
can
undergo.
This
second
half
looks
more
specifically
at
matter
and
how
we
can
classify
it:
as
pure
substances
or
mixtures.
Last
class,
we
talked
about
the
differences
between
pure
substances
and
mixtures.
This
class
we
will
continue
with
this
and
move
onto
the
difference
between
homogeneous
+
heterogeneous
mixtures.
This
class,
we
will
start
solutions
&
dissolution
if
there
is
time.
Objectives
The
class
will
have
discussions
about
mixtures
and
pure
substances.
This
will
Competency
force
students
to
reflect
upon
items
in
their
daily
lives.
I
will
question
students
to
provoke
them
to
think
about
their
evidence
for
why
their
examples
fit
each
category:
they
must
analyze
everyday
situations
from
the
point
of
view
of
science.
Cross
Competency
1:
Uses
information.
Curricular
Students
will
make
connections
between
what
they
already
know,
and
what
Competencies
they
are
learning.
Students
already
have
experience
with
how
substances
act
when
put
together.
They
will
use
this
information
to
better
understand
what
is
happening
in
mixtures.

Lesson:
Last
class
we
talked
about
the
ways
we
can
categorize
matter:
pure
substances
vs.
mixtures
-
I
will
quiz
students
about
these
elements.
We
will
continue
be
talking
about
the
different
kinds
of
mixtures
that
exists.
Development:
I
will
ask
students
to
think
of
things
they
are
familiar
with
and
identify
whether
they
are
mixtures
or
pure
substances.
I will ask students how they think two substances can look like one.
This will lead into dissolution: a solute and solvent being combined.
I
will
use
an
analogy
of
people
to
explain
how
the
particles
mix
during
dissolution.
Students
discuss
about
things
they
know
that
are
considered
solutions.
Can
they
identify
the
solvent,
solute?
Some
kinds
of
particles
do
not
blend
well.
Like
oil
and
water.
Closure:
Students
may
work
on
their
crossword
&
handout
concerning
the
differences
between
pure
substances
and
the
different
kinds
of
mixtures.
Homework:
Students
will
be
asked
to
complete
the
memory
check
on
pg.
205
of
their
textbook.
They
will
also
complete
their
crossword
puzzle
and
their
handout
on
pure
substances
and
mixtures.
For
this
lesson,
I
will
be
working
on
my
teacher
presence
and
encouraging
participation
from
the
students.
I
will
make
sure
I
am
circulating
the
classroom,
whether
we
are
having
a
discussion
or
taking
notes.
I
want
to
make
sure
that
I
encourage
participation
from
all
students
not
just
those
who
are
always
eager
to
answer
questions.
