Prodromal Stage- forewarn of matters to come

Acute- crisis-triggering event
Chronic- responding to matter
Resolution- clear signal marks the end of the event

Code Key: Aristotelian Code

Looking for how writers and speakers are framing perceptions on Ethos,
Pathos, and Logos.

Part 1: Prodromal Stage

Lance Armstrong was able to pass all of his drug tests.
They hid. They lied. They used injections to bring their EPO-saturated blood
back toward neutral. According to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agencys 200-page
report condemning the U.S. Postal Service dynasty, Lance Armstrong and his
cadre of support riders beat the international drug-testing system by
manipulating it on every level, from simply hiding to injecting saline just
before drug tests.
Code and notes: Logos- With the U.S Anti-Doping Agency 200 page
document there is a way to argue that Lance Armstrong didnt lie. He
was found doing whatever it took to get around the drug tests
throughout his seven tours.
Avoiding events in order to avoid testing.
Hincapie testified that Armstrong abandoned the Vuelta al Pas Vasco in 2000
in order to avoid testing, and Johan Bruyneel told Danielson in 2006 that
Armstrong hid from testers in Puigcerd, Spain, when he was using EPO.
Code and notes: Logos- Looking back, Armstrongs teammate
admits how he would leave a race in order to get out of a test that
could put him and his team in jeopardy. This caused suspicion to rise as
Lance started randomly leaving events.
Quitting races to avoid testing.

The investigation found that Armstrong went to great efforts to avoid doping
controls. Those efforts included providing inadequate whereabouts
information and dropping out of a race to dodge testers, according to
longtime friend and teammate George Hincapie.
Code and notes: Logos- multiple sources say that Lance would not
only skip out on events but also from races in order to avoid testing.
Even when it came to answering the door he told his teammates to
have someone else answer for him.
Teammates knew when the testing would be. Maybe tipped off.
According to David Zabriskie, a former Armstrong teammate who last week
confessed to doping as part of the investigation, Johan [Bruyneel] always
seemed to know when drug testers were coming at races. His warning that
theyre coming tomorrow came on more than one occasion.
Code and notes: Ethos + The main reason Lance Armstrong and the
rest of the team was able to avoid the drug testing throughout their
careers. This is also why there were supposedly over 500 drug tests
administered throughout Lances time and he only happened to be
present for 250 to 300 of them.

Part 2: Acute Stage

2010: Armstrongs teammate tells the truth.

Code and notes: Pathos+ In 2010 Armstrongs teammate Floyd

admits to use of performance enhancing drugs along with Armstrong.
He also claims to have been bullied and thats why it has been kept a
secret for so long. This was the statement that sparked the Lance
Armstrong Scandal.
2011: Another rider told the truth of Armstrongs doping.

Code and notes: Logos- Tyler Hamilton, Armstrongs former

teammate admitted to injecting and told the world that Lance
Armstrong was doping on his first Tours de France. Due to his
confession many more investigations were put in action to determine
the severity of Armstrongs doping career.

Part 3: Chronic Stage

Armstrong realizes that his kids were lying for him and that it was
all over.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_0PSZ59Aws
Code and notes: Pathos+ As Lance Armstrong admits to taking
banned substances in all seven Tours de France. He tells the story of
telling his kids that he was a cheater and a doper and asked them to
not defend him anymore. This was the point that he knew it was over
for him. He knew that he could not do this anymore.
Armstrong steps down from Livestrong foundation.
October 18, 2012 - Just a few weeks after his resignation as Livestrong's
chairman, Lance Armstrong stepped down from the foundation's board of
directors in an effort to help spare it from the continuing controversy
surrounding his cycling career.
Code and notes: logos+ As he realized that the information was out
and that he had no more time to hide, he decided to take the matter
face on and do what he thought was right in order to save his $500
million foundation, Livestrong. He not only stepped down as chairman
for Livestrong but also left the board completely to avoid all
controversy relating to the organization. He didnt want his actions to
negatively affect the organization that has changed so many people
lives.
Even after resigning the controversy continued.
November 12, 2012 - But the controversy continued to swirl after USADA
released a mammoth evidence file against him on Oct. 10. The file contained
26 sworn witness statements, plus scientific data, that said he used banned
drugs and blood transfusions to gain an edge throughout his career. Since
the evidence came out, Armstrong also has lost all of his major sponsors,
including Nike and Oakley. In addition, the International Cycling Union

decided it would not appeal the sanctions on Armstrong's behalf.

Code and notes: Logos- By Armstrong losing all of his sponsors, this
scandal was made as public as possible. Nike and Oakley are very well
known companies to the world and have displayed Lance in many of
their advertisements and now they were faced with a difficult decision
to stay with him or not. Due to all the negativity they were forced to
expel his sponsorship in order to keep a good name for the company.
This was devastating for Lance, knowing that his good life was
coming to an end.
Although he has been deemed a cheater that doesnt change
Livestrongs accomplishments.
One of Armstrong's most prominent backers, Texas governor and one-time
presidential candidate Rick Perry, insisted people should not connect the
allegations or Armstrong's resignation to the cancer research he has backed.
Code and notes: Pathos+ Some people were strong enough to look
past the doping and the cheating and look at all the good the man has
done for people through his organization. Although people wanted to
shut down everything he had and owned, you had to take a step back
and think about how many lives he changed by raising over $500
million through Livestrong. The Texas governor was one who didnt
care about the cycling allegations and instead tried to focus on the
movements he has made on cancer research.
He confesses publically for the first time.

Code and notes: Logos+ This interview was the turning point for the
Lance Armstrong doping scandal because he finally admits to all the
bad things he did throughout his cycling career. He not only admits to
what he did but how he felt while doing it. Although he felt numb to the
emotion side of doping and cheating, this interview makes up for the
pain as he admits that he is a cheater and a liar.

Part 4: Resolution Stage

He was stripped of all his awards.
October 12, 2012: The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency released more than 1,000
pages of evidence in doping allegations against Armstrong and his
5

teammates. He was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles in the scandal.
On Thursday, the International Olympic Committee demanded that he give
back the bronze medal he won in 2000.
Code and notes: Logos- This was the more memorable day for Lance
Armstong and the rest of the world who was following this case. Going
from one of the most amazing athletes in the world setting more
records than most, to the biggest cheater ever known in sports. By
losing all of his seven Tour de France titles, he was useless in his eyes
because that is what got him to be so successful. That is what made
him the man he was that day. All of that was lost as he was deemed a
cheater and liar.
Armstrong wasnt the only one caught.
2012- Eighty percent of the Tour de France medalists between 1996 and
2010 have been "similarly tainted by doping," according to the USADA report
on Armstrong.
Code and notes: Logos- This data came out after Lance was called
out for cheating. It is not fair to only punish him when chances are the
majority of the other contestants were just as guilty. This blew up into a
whole new investigation where many more athletes lost their
previously known titles due to doping and cheating.
Armstrong apologizes and admits to everything he has done.

Code and notes: Pathos+ Lance Armstrong admits to taking banned
substances in all seven Tours de France. He tells the story of telling his
kids that he was a cheater and a doper and asked them to not defend
him anymore. This was the point that he knew it was over for him. He

Lance is a human like

the rest of us and is
bound to make some
mistakes so should be
forgiven to a point
especially all he has
done for cancer
research.

Pathos +

He was a role model to

many people and after
misleading the world
about his success he
should not be forgiven.

Pathos -

Code and notes: Pathos + By looking at the graph below it shows

that the out of 100 people asked, 66 percent wanted to forgive him for
all that he has done for the world for cancer and because he is a

human just like the rest of us and we all make mistakes.
