SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
Our Lodge Scholarship Committee and Board of Officers have made a decision to split our resources for the Elks
Scholarship Program. It has been decided that the ENF Annual Scholarship Program will continue each year as scheduled
by Grand Lodge Office of ENF. A Scholarship Award will be given to the top male and top female winner of the competition.
Those winners will be forwarded to the District Competition level for continuation towards the Grand Lodge ENF Program
Awards.
We also would like to start our own Scholarship Program for all Students in their Senior year in a local High School that
are Children and Grandchildren of our Lodge Members. With that being decided; a Program is being developed, to nearly
mirror the ENF Annual Scholarship Program, so that we may get this local Program started this 2015 winter season. The
Program will not be held during the same time frame (local deadline for ENF Scholarship was December 5, 2014) as set by ENF,
but will follow a separate deadline each year in February.
The startup requirements will begin with the following:
Must be a Senior student in a local High School (inside Lodge jurisdiction).
Must be a Lodge Members Child or Grandchild (Stepchildren / Grandchildren & legally Adopted Children /
Grandchildren included). Sponsoring Member Name & Membership Number must be included on Application to
be eligible.
Follow all Requirements as set by Scholarship Committee (visit our Lodge website: www.EssexElks.org Scholarship
Page for instructions). Download and print all instructions (Must be included in Packet), and any other pertinent
Application information. All instructions will be posted and available on January 6. Must meet local Lodge Deadline
by 9:00 pm February 19th (at Lodge by 9 pm).
Thanks for your patience as we begin this new endeavor for our Children/Grandchildren that are completing their high school
studies and moving on to an advanced school of learning to prepare for their selected careers in our society.

ICE at an ICE RINK

With the recent tragic events in Lansdowne, please make an extra effort
to know where your kids are at all times.
*Mark the spot with a hat or a piece of clothing, so that if the victim becomes
submerged rescuers have a point of reference. Time is of the essence with this sort of
rescue.
*Then, reach, throw and row. If the victim is near enough to shore to reach a ladder, tree branch or pole, extend one of these toward him as quickly as possible and pull
him to safety. Throw him a rope or a flotation device, if possible. Row toward him, if the
water is clear and you have access to a boat. Again, do not leave the shore and venture
into the water or onto the ice unless you have special water rescue training.
*If the victim can crawl out of the water and onto the ice, have him roll away from
the crack and crawl on his belly to shore. Staying low distributes the body's weight on
the ice and helps reduce the risk of the ice cracking.
