Brief Literature Review:

In the past few decades, the online communication has changed dramatically. With the
invention of social media people can communicate with others, share ideas, information,
pictures and videos at a very high rate. Since technology became a vital part of our life,
every day, vast amount of people including both students and educators are spending
many hours in social media. Facebook and YouTube are the most popular one among
students; however, educators/adults are using Twitter, Linkedn and The Educators PLN
as well. This review of existing literature will focus on educational uses of social media
as a professional development and a communication tool.
According to Killion (2011), if teachers expect to implement 21st-century learning in
classrooms to prepare students to succeed in todays globally connected and emergent
world, teachers must develop their own expertise with new learning technologies. Twitter
and Educator; PLN (Personal Learning Network) became an effective tool of professional
development by supporting the idea of connection, collaboration and reflection. Social
networking such as Twitter, Pinterest provide educators a new format of professional
development. With these social networks, educators can share information, exchange
conversations and connect with the fields professional anywhere and anytime.

For example, The Educators PLN, the social network that was created for educators that
now connects nearly 12,000 professionals and hosts approximately 700 educational
videos, more than 100 groups, and more than 800 blogs.
By nature, social media is a place to make connections and interact with others. Its core
strength is predicated on the fact that connections and interactions are easier than
previously imagined. Many teachers have taken to Twitter to form communities that
share resources, discuss strategies, and highlight best practices. Two great examples are
#inquirychat for inquiry-based learning and #isedchat for independent school faculty and
staff. These chats serve as hubs for like-minded professionals not only to share ideas, but
also to make connections with other educators across the globe. The level of engagement
varies from deep discussions on pedagogical theory to passive consumption of shared
resources. The varying degrees of interactivity reflect individuals engaging in different
ways, often based on personal learning styles: some are connectors, some are thinkers,
some are doers, some are cultivators, and more. The richness of this community stems
from its diversity and the ease in which these strengths can be utilized.(Ames, 2015)
The other way to use social media in educational field is to create a communication
between both students and parents. In his article Rocco (2013) explains that the first and
most important reason to integrate social media into the educational world is to improve
communication with your stakeholders. Social Media apps and resources have provided
educators a plethora of options when communicating with their stakeholders. The vast
majority of them are free. Our schools and school districts have many events and
activities that can be communicated to the community that make Social Media
communication valuable.
According to Baskwill (2013) todays teachers are increasingly turning to a variety of
digital technologies to make communication with parents easier and more current. Socialmedia tools, such as Facebook and Twitter, are helping teachers keep parents and other
community members informed. Teachers are encouraged to go where the parents are;
more parents are apt to be on Facebook or Twitter every day, whereas they might check
the class webpage only once in a while or when reminded. In her book named Attention
Grabbing Skills for Involving Parents in their Childrens Learning, Baskwill also
mentions that Facebook allows you to share class news and information with the parents
of your students. You can create a private parents group for your class and share
information only with the parents of your students. Types of information you might
share: details of upcoming field trips, school closings (scheduled or unforeseen), special
events or parties, pictures of student projects, students published writing, etc. Facebook
has a feature that allows you to post updates that parents will see immediately when they
log onto their page. You can post information that pertains to homeworkfor example,
Dont forget that the Science Fair project is due on Wednesdayto clarify a new
policy, or to detail directions for an assignment. Parents can also send you a private
message to ask questions about homework or to ask for a meeting. Parents who might be
uncomfortable asking questions in person might feel more at home when using this
medium.
Social networking is a dicey tool that while allowing teacher to increase the level of
communication using a recognizable social media format, possesses inherently a high risk
of distraction. As a means for disseminating information and exhibiting and sharing the
skills and talents of the students (through weblogs, for example), social networking can

undoubtedly support the teacher-parent-student partnership. (Ramasubbu,2015)

specific with your examples. You can mention software/hardware names,
specific methods that you plan to use, etc.
How would you implement this research in your career? (At least 1

Reflection:
I was interested with this topic from two different perspectives; one as a parent and the

other as an educator. It is obvious that learning is a process that occurs through

connections and conversation. However, it should not be limited around four walls or
during a designated time. Therefore, social media became popular among most people
since it offers a limitless opportunity to connect with many different people and engage in
ideas and information from around the world.
As a parent of three students, I receive a lot of information through social platforms, such
as twitter and Facebook from my kids school. Therefore, I dont stay behind in terms of
what is going on at their school. Even though I dont like my kids spending a lot of time
on social media, I definitely like to use these tools for educational purposes.
Educators, including me are implementing technologies and social media to increase
students success and interest in school settings. We are also using social media tools,
such as Twitter and Facebook, to communicate with parents and the community since it
allows us to share class news, important dates, events, and pictures with ease. We also
use these effective tools for professional development purposes. Social media allows us
to have continues conversations about our experiences, ideas and maybe difficulties that
we face. For me, during my first year of college counselling, social media has connected
me to many professionals, ideas, conversations, and resources. It changed my mind about
the way of learning and teaching. It should happen whenever and wherever we need it.
If we use social network in a positive way, it can be an extraordinary educational tool.
Thanks to social media for making learning/teaching possible anywhere and anytime.
