the statement I make is accurate.
Statements:
Thanksgiving is in the Month of November.
Winter was hard on the Pilgrims.
The Native Americans taught the Pilgrims to Bake cakes.
The N.A. Taught the Pilgrims to grow corn, pumpkins, and to catch fish.
(Given Yes and No cards for the leader to hold up after discussion.)
3. I am thankful for.Students will complete a craft (Turkey body) with I am thankful for
and will write (with the help of teachers) 3-5 things they are thankful for on each turkey feather.
They can decide to choose family, sports/activities, school, teachers, friends, food, TV, movies,
play, toys, holidays, places, pets etc.

***I have a second book I can read to them (Run Turkey, Run by Diane Mar
) after the students finish.
Rationale: Students should learn the origins of our celebrated holidays and the history behind
our traditions. It is important for students to learn historical aspects that influence our modern
history, even traditions. Students also should learn about the ethnic relationships that helped
shape this country (Native American and Caucasian during this time era, based on where the
Pilgrims came from.)
Objective(s) of the lesson:

SWBAT identify attributes of the First Thanksgiving and the historical events associated.
SWBAT create a self-made list of things they are thankful using phonetic spelling.
SWBAT
Lesson Opening: Question the students about their Thanksgiving traditions (food, whos house,
etc), taking about 4 answers.
Connection: How does this familys traditions match some of your own? What is different?
What would have been different making that first Thanksgiving meal than making a meal in our
kitchens today? Would it have been easier or harder?

Instructional Strategies/Processes:
-Questioning and Probing
-Cooperative Grouping/ discussions
-Whole group instruction
-demonstration
-read aloud
Products: What I am thankful for Turkey
Assessment:
-Groups answers for questions
- Evaluate the authenticity and sentimental nature of students answers for their turkey.
Closure: Have the students share their list with the others at their tables. They should say what
they are thankful and why it is important to them. I will then ask for volunteers to help me fill in
the details about the first thanksgiving (based off of the story.)
Homework: N/A
Differentiation: I will have the teachers and aids help students write their answers if they do not
know their answers as sight words or phonetically spell them out.
Students can choose to do between 3-5 feathers, based on how many words they are able to write
easily
Materials/Equipment:
-construction paper
-Crayons/pencils
