apostrophe.

Use the apostrophe with a


contraction, a shortened form
of a word.
Use the apostrophe to show
ownership or possession.

Contractions

When two words are combined to make one


word, an apostrophe is used to show where
letters have been omitted. This is called a
contraction.

Contractions are reserved for informal


occasions.
The apostrophe must be placed where the
letter has been omitted.

can have two meaning.

possessive words.

Singular Possesives
Use

the apostrophe and an s to form


the possessive form of a noun to indicate
ownership or belonging to.

cats life is very easy.


Marys house is full of cats.

Names ending in s
For

names ending in s, you have two


choices:

add s or
add only an apostrophe.

The

United States flag is very colourful.


The United Statess flag is very colourful.

Plural Possesives
Form

the possessive of plural nouns by


adding only an apostrophe.
