Work Environment
Dance is strenuous, physical, and involves long days of practice. Many dance companies
tour for part of the year to supplement a limited performance schedule at home. Dancers
who perform in musical productions and other family entertainment spend much of their
time on the road, while others work in nightclubs or on cruise ships. Most dance
performances are in the evening, while rehearsals and practice take place during the day.
As a result, dancers often work very long and late hours. Generally, dancers work in
modern and temperature-controlled facilities; however, some studios may be older and
less comfortable.
Main Duties
Train, exercise, and attend dance classes to maintain high levels of technical
proficiency, physical ability, and physical fitness.
Important Skills
Athleticism. Successful dancers must have excellent balance, physical strength, and
physical dexterity, so they can move their bodies without falling or losing their sense
of rhythm.
Creativity. Dancers need artistic ability and creativity to express ideas through
movement.
Interpersonal skills. Dancers may find job opportunities by networking within their
communities.
Persistence. Dancers must commit to years of intense practice. They need to be able
to accept rejection after an audition and to continue to practice for future spots.
Physical stamina. Dancers are often physically active for long periods, so they must be
able to rehearse for many hours without getting tired.
Teamwork. Most dance routines involve a group, so dancers must be able to work
together to be successful.
