Procedures:
Anticipatory Set/Opening Activity
1. The teacher will present to the students different vocabulary words with their definitions
that they will come across when working in each center.
2. The teacher will randomly select a students name from the name sticks. When the
teacher selects the name that students will go to the front of the class to participate.
3. The student will select an index card with two fractions on it that is facing down from the
table.
4. The student will then proceed to write down on the board the two fractions that they
randomly selected from the index cards that were on the desk facing down.
5. The student will then identify the denominator and numerator using the vocabulary
sentence strips to label the fraction.
6. The student will choose the correct picture that represents each fraction written on the
board to help them get a visual understanding of the fraction.
7. Then the students will compare the two fractions to see if they are either <, >, or = to
each other. The student will use any of these three symbols to compare the fractions on
the board.

8. The teacher will repeat steps 2-8 about four times to warm up the students and have them
practice and activate their prior knowledge of fractions.
Activity #1 Building Pizza Fractions (Sariah Castro)
1.
2.
3.
4.
Display materials prior to the arrival of the children to be ready to teach the concept.
Explain the children how this activity is going to be running.
Each child gets a fraction index card from the middle of the table.
Children would then have to create the fraction in their pizza template by dividing it into
the given number of pieces and decorate the fraction given.
5. Let the students repeat the procedure again with a distinct fraction.
Activity #2 Comparing Pizza Fractions (Jasmine Reyes)
1. The teacher will explain to the students what they will be doing in this specific center,
2. The teacher will then introduce the different materials that are going to be used to help
them compare fractions.
3. The teacher will explain how to play the board game of Comparing Pizza Fractions.
4. The teacher will then model how the game is played.
5. Then the students will each select a character piece to represent them on the board game
when playing.
6. The teacher will group the students into two different groups of 2 or 3 students depending
on how many students are in each center.
7. The students will then proceed to play the game by first selecting an index card with two
fractions on the card.
8. The students will then create each fraction that is represented in the card using the
fraction manipulatives.
9. The students will then decide if the fractions are equivalent, less than, or more than using
the following symbols <, >, and =.
10. If the student answers correctly they will roll a dice and advance on the spaces of the
board the number that is showing on the dice that they rolled.
11. Whoever wins in each of the two groups will win a prize. There will be two winners in
each group. The winner will be the students who get to the finish first or that is the
closest to the finish space in the time that is provided for them to participate in this
center.
Activity #3 Adding Pizza Fractions: All You Can Eat Pizza!! (Christa Luna)
1. Teacher will make paper pizzas cut into 8ths and lay out the pizza boxes.
2. Once the students are seated the teacher will review fraction vocabulary for addition such
as numerator, and denominator.
3. The teacher will demonstrate the activity by getting a plate and collecting pizzas.

4. The teacher will then give the students each a paper plate. And have them go up to the
pizza buffet and collect as many slices as they wish they could possibly eat.
5. Once the students have grabbed their pizza the students will then be seated work with a
partner to complete the word problem.
6. Students will tape on the index cards that have pre written fractions to fill in the blanks
on the sentence strips.
7. Once they have completed their word problem, we will review their answers and make
correction or clarifications.
8. The students will then switch partners and repeat the process.
Activity #4 (Jacob Newberry)
As the teacher I will explain to the students how to subtract a fraction with the same
Denominator. Once I explain, I will lay out the fraction flashcards and the fraction board game.
Each Fraction flashcard has a problem that the student must solve. They will also have a piece of
paper to show their work. Once they figure out the answer, they will be able to move forward on
the board. The first student to finish will win.
Closure
1. Students will all stand.
2. Teacher will throw a beach ball and whoever catches the ball has to answer the question
that their hand lands on.
3. Once the students have answered the question they will toss it to another class mate.
About 3 or 4 students will answer a question to close off the activity.
Assessment:
The teacher will conduct an informal assessment to check for understanding in each center. The
teacher will constantly be observing the students work to check for understanding and will also
ask questions to the students in each of the four centers.
Closure
Based off the days activities, pre written question will be written on each color of the beach ball.
Students will utilize prior knowledge or what they learned to answer the question.
