Roosevelt Wins Presidency


Roosevelt won the Presidency with a landslide

victory.
He promised reforms and new policies which would
pull the country out of the depression

The New Deal


Roosevelt put together

a team of advisors that


consisted of
professors, doctors,
lawyers and
journalists.
This was known as
The Brain Trust
Roosevelt and The
Brain Trust created a
plan to pull us out of
the depression known
as The New Deal

The Hundred Days


Roosevelt launched a

period of intense
activity known as the
Hundred Days
Congress passed over
15 pieces of New Deal
legislation
strengthened the
Federal government

Fireside Chats
Roosevelt gave a series of radio addresses to the

public
They explained the progress of New Deal Reforms
in plain language.
They made Americans feel as if the President were
talking directly to them

New Deal and Banks


Congress passed the

Glass Steagall Act


which established the
FDIC
This provided
insurance to accounts
of up to $5,000 dollars
Helped renew trust in
Americas banking
system

Rural Assistance
Agricultural Adjustment Act
The government sought to
raise crop prices by
lowering production
The paid farmers not to
plant crops.
The reduced supply of
crops would raise prices

Providing Work
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)
Put young men 18-25 to work building roads, planting
parks, building dams

National Industrial

Recovery Act

Created the National


Recovery Administration
(NRA)
Provided federal money
to states for
construction projects
Created standard
working hours (8 hour
work days)
Banned child labor

Many people opposed

the new deal because


it was a policy of
deficit spending
Deficit spending-
spending more money
that the government
receives taxes.

after the first two years of office, there were


many improvements, but unemployment
was still high and the budget not doing well.
Roosevelt created the 2nd New Deal

Eleanor Roosevelt

Eleanor Roosevelt was a


social reformer who
heavily influenced her
husbands policies
Traveled the country
observing the suffering of
the depression and
reported it back to her
FDR
She urged her husband to
appoint women to
government positions

Works Progress Administration


The WPA was created

to give jobs not only to


blue collar laborers,
but white collar
laborers as well
This helped out artists,
writers, poets and
teachers.

Improving labor
Wagner act

government would
protect the rights of
workers
Workers were able to
join unions and
engage in collective
bargaining.

Social Security Act

The Social Security act was passed in 1935


Federal tax would be taken out of wages
This tax would go to people over the age of 65
This was one of the most important New Deal Reforms
