Beowulf Old vs Young
The epic poem Beowulfspansmany years, covering both the exploits of the hero
Beowulf during his early life as the happenings of his later years. Specifically, Beowulf
begins as classic hero, the epitome of strength and courage. He is referred to by Hrothgar
as Greater / And stronger than anyone anywhere in this world. Additionally, he is told
that his Glory is too great to forget. This supports the inference that Beowulf is a great
strong warrior who is regarded as a hero by nearly all. Additonally, he was depicted as
being very handsom and being greta weapons and armor, based on the statements about
him no commoner carries/ Such weapons, unless his appearance, and his beauty and
They arrived with their mail shirts/ Glittering, silvershining links/ Clanking an iron song
as they came. These statements all support the image of a young Beowulf as a strong,
handsome man who represents the best of the ideals of the heroic culture.
Later in the story, we see a largely transformed Beowulf. He is no longer young
and vital, but instead has become an old wise king, embodying wisdom and selflessness
rather than his previous heroic pride. He is advised by Hrothgar that to be a good King he
must not let pride get the better of him. He also feels satisfied with his life, saying My
days Have gone as fate willed,...I can leave / This life happy. However, Beowulfs death
raises questions about this wisdom of a king, and whether or not he allows his warriors
pride and the heros code take over his decision when he fights the dragon, specifically in
the statement, When he comes to me / I mean to stand, not run from his shooting /
Flames, stand till fate decides / Which of us wins. My heart is firm. In this, Beowulf
seems to lapse from wise king back to his old self, showing that he really still is a warrior
and hero at heart.
