FEATURES OF INDIVIDUALISM-COLECTIVISM IN UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

Introduction
The individualism-collectivism dimension is the most representative psychological dimension of a
state. It describes the position that places a person in relation to others in its environment. The premise of
this cultural dimension is the intensity of relations between members of a society, organization or group.
Individualism is based on individual to be motivated by personal goals and preferences, is associated
with relations of equality and private property.
Collectivism is based on cultures that encourage individual tendency to see part of a social group, an
expression of the need for networking.

The lowest Hofstede Dimension for the United Arab Emirates is the Individualism ranking at 38,
compared to a world average ranking of 64.
The United Arab Emirates, with a score of 38 is considered a collectivistic society. This is manifest
in a close commitment to the member 'group'. Loyalty is very important in this dimension.
In a collectivistic society everyone takes responsibility for members of their group.
Employee relationships are perceived in moral terms, hiring and promotion decisions take account of
the employees in-group.

Looking at the individualism size of the United Arab Emirates, the organizations promotes adherence
to the rules, respect for autorities, and is associated with stable roles. In the organizational environment,

peoples cooperate among themselves, taking into account the interests of the group to which they belong.
Because it is a collectivist society, the United Arab Emirates is easier to achieve a functional management,
and the result is the merit of all.

Example:

Consider the case of the USA and United Arab Emirates. If an American asks a favor of an Arab, in
which of these two cases is more likely to achieve the desired result:

1. Omar, you was very prompt every time I've asked for information.
I hope I will get the informations on time.
2. Omar, you and your team have been very prompt every time I asked for information.
I hope I will get the informations on time.

In this case, the second example has the best potential of conviction in a collectivist society.

In collectivist societies such as United Arab Emirates, we can give an advice:


Do not criticize anyone in public and do not ask what is their opinion after you said that's your
opinion.
So it is important to know what kind of culture you address.
