Assignment #1
Problem 1.

Rectangular Cross Sectional

Area in 1 in

10 in

30

P=1200 lb

Determine
a) the average normal stress
b) the average shear stress
c) Bending Moment at the support

Problem 2. Draw the shear force and the bending moment diagram of the beam shown below.

Problem 3. A in OD in ID steel tube is subjected to a bending moment of 10,00 lb-in and a

torque of 7,500 lb in
a) Determine the polar moment of inertia of the tube
b) Determine the maximum bending stress in the tube
c) Determine the maximum torsional shear stress in the tube

Problem 4. For each of the plane stress states below, draw a Mohrs circle diagram properly labeled, find
the principal normal and shear stresses, and determine the angle from the x axis to 1. Draw stress
elements as in Fig. 3-11 c and d and label all details. Find the same using the transformation equations as
well.
(a) x = 20 kpsi, y = -10 kpsi, xy = 8 kpsi cw
(b) x = -12 kpsi, y = 22 kpsi, xy = 7 kpsi ccw

Problem 5. For each of the stress states listed below, find all three principal normal and shear stresses.
Draw a complete Mohrs three-circle diagram and label all points of interest.
(c) x = -80 MPa, y = -30 MPa, xy = 20 MPa cw

(d) x = 50 MPa, z = -20 MPa, xy = 30 MPa cw

Problem 6. A 30-mm-diameter copper rod is 1 m long with a yield strength of 70 MPa. Determine the
axial force necessary to cause the diameter of the rod to reduce by 0.01 percent, assuming elastic
deformation. Check that the elastic deformation assumption is valid by comparing the axial stress to the
yield strength.

Problem 7. Electrical strain gauges were applied to a notched specimen to determine the stresses in the
notch. The results were x = 0.0019 and y = -0.00072. Find x and y if the material is carbon steel.
