Q& A Assignment

The Q & A forum is a great place to ask questions about the class such as where can I
find the review questions document or I dont understand the difference between a
control variable and a control group. The Q & A forum is also a good place to have
deeper discussions about the class content. [Theres also a community discussion
forum if you want to have other slightly off topic discussions].
I recommend you subscribe to the Q & A forum; you can do this by clicking on the
subscribe button once you are in the forum. This will send you an email summarizing
the questions that were asked that day. You never know when someone will ask a
question that helps you as well. When I am a student in an online class I always
subscribe to this forum (most classes have one) and have found it very helpful. As an
instructor, I am definitely subscribed and get an email as soon as you post a question. I
do this so I can answer the questions as soon as possible.
The assignment:

Biology is "the study of life". "Bio" means "life", and "ology" means "the study of". We learned
the difference between "living" and "nonliving" as children (trees are alive, rocks are not alive),
but the definition of life is not that simple. We will have a discussion here about the definition of
life. The questions below can help us have that discussion.
1. What is one characteristic of life?
2. Where are the characteristics of life listed in the textbook?
3. What is a virus?
4. Where does the book discuss viruses?
5. What is a good web site to help us understand what viruses are?
6. Why might viruses be considered alive?
7. Why are viruses not considered alive?
8. What is a prion?
9. What is a good web site to help us understand what prions are?
10. Why might prions be considered alive?
11. Why are prions not considered alive?
12. What is a viroid?
13. What is a good web site to help us understand what viroids are?
14. Why might viroids be considered alive?
15. Why are viroids not considered alive?
16. Why is it better to discuss "characteristics" of life rather than the "definition" of life?
17. Is it reasonable to have "gray areas" between living and nonliving (why or why not)?
18. Does identifying the difference between "living" and "nonliving" matter (why or why
not)?
