The document provides information about the Kangaroo Math Competition (KMC) in Malaysia including its history, objectives, advantages, categories, format, procedures, important dates and contact details.

The Kangaroo Math Competition originated in Australia in 1980 and later spread to other countries. It was started to encourage mathematical enrichment activities among students. The Association Kangaroo sans Frontieres was formed to organize the competition internationally.

The objectives of participating in KMC in Malaysia include supporting the internationalization of the Malaysian education system, popularizing mathematical enrichment activities, allowing students to achieve an international certification, increasing Malaysian participation in the international competition, and exposing students to interesting math problems. Some advantages are that the syllabus is less advanced and caters to all levels from Year 1 to Form 6.

HISTORY OF THE KANGAROO MATH COMPETITION

1980

Peter OHolloran, a math teacher at Sydney, started a math

competition in Australian schools. The contest, which was
known as the Australian Mathematical National contest,
was a tremendous success.

1991

Two French teachers, Andr Deledicq and Jean Pierre

Boudine, decided to start a competition in France under the
name Kangaroo ( or Kangourou in French ) to pay tribute to
their Australian friends. In the first few years, the contest grew
until more than 20 European countries participated. The
countries jointly formed the Association Kangourou sans
Frontieres (AKSF) (Association of Kangaroo Without Borders).

1993

The Board members of AKSF convened a European meeting

in Paris. They were impressed by the steadily increasing number
of participants in the French Kangourou competition. Other
countries decided to adopt the same contest scheme : Hungary,
Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia and Spain. The Kangaroo
remains popular in these countries.

1994

At the European Council meeting in Strasbourg,

the delegates of 10 European countries decided to formally
incorporate the AKSF with an elected Board of 6 members
and legal Statutes.

1995

The association was registered in Paris.

1996

All country members participated in the organization

of the Annual General Assembly of AKSF. Membership have
grown to include countries in Asia, Africa and South America.

2012

Malaysia was unanimously elected to join the AKSF in 2012.

At the annual AKSF meeting in Cyprus, Mr. Suhaimi Ramly was
appointed as the country representative.

2014

Second year of KMC in Malaysia attracted 20,000 participants.
