    Learning Targets:
    I can explain what an idiom is, how idioms are used in every day
    language, and provide my own examples.

    We will review the definition of a common type of figurative


    language: idioms. We'll do this together with a short interactive
    powerpoint (at
    http://www.icteachers.co.uk/resources/literacy/idioms.ppt).

    *I will set the timer on my iPhone and the student will write down
    as many idioms as he can in four minutes. I will assist him. Then
    the student and I will work together to write down the meaning of
    the idioms he identified.
    *Next, the student will pick four of his favorite idioms and
    illustrate them. For example, if he writes down hit the hay, he
    might draw a kid in bed or cut a picture out of a magazine of
    someone looking exhausted. When he is finished, I will laminate
    each idiom and use them to display an idiom of the week in our
    classroom for a month.
    Accommodations: Instead of going over several types of

    Using an interactive powerpoint will help the student visually
    process the information better than if I sat there and lectured him.
    Several of the idioms in the PPT have pictures that go along with
    them. Next, generating and translating his own idioms will give
    him confidence. Illustrating his idioms will also provide a way for
    him to be creative while still meeting a content standard.
    *As a formative assessment, when the student is finished with his
    illustrations, I will ask him to make a sign with the definition of
    idiom in his own words. I will also laminate it and use it for our
    classroom display.
