Upfronts: Discovery Communications Pulls Back From Sensationalist Fare
Discovery Communications is veering away from some of its tabloid tendencies in
favor of a programming slate that embraces authenticity and education over the
live stunts and troubled reality stars the company has embraced in the past.
We are about adventure and people finding their best life and living it, said David
Zaslav, chief executive of the company, during a presentation to journalists Tuesday
morning.
The themes are evident nearly across the board at Discoverys various networks.
Under new president Rich Ross, the companys flagship Discovery Channel is relying
less on live stunts like daredevil Nik Wallendas tightrope walks high above the earth
and placing more emphasis on natural history specials that take viewers on quests
for treasure and behind the scenes of an undercover operation to protect
endangered species. At TLC, long a place for outrageous content on the order of
Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, inspiration and inclusion are among the themes
being promoted. Animal Planet, which in 2014 trotted out series about survivalists
and bounty hunters, in 2015 is burnishing programs about conservation, restoration
and animal adventure.
The back-to-its-roots approach Discovery was founded by John Hendricks as a
media company that could help viewers satisfy their curiosity about the world and
how it works comes as the company has faced ratings dips and challenges in
winning advertising. Both Zaslav and Joe Abruzzese, Discoverys president of
By Mom and Dad is a social-experiment series about people who let their parents
serve as personal matchmakers.
TLC programs, should be the equivalent of a big warm hug, said Marjorie Kaplan,
the Discovery group president who oversees TLC. We throw our arms open to
everyone, without judgement.
Not all the eyebrow-raisers are gone. Discovery Channel will continue to air Naked
And Afraid, the survivalist show featuring people sans wardrobe. And at the
Investigation Discovery cable network, examinations of lurid crimes and love gone
wrong remain the main staple.
Zaslav on Tuesday also once again talked up the importance of Discovery's global
reach, saying the firm was the No. 1 international pay TV media company. With
almost 20 percent growth over the part five years from Discovery's international
business, Zaslav said he was "even more optimistic" about the next five years,
especially amid a "slowing cable business" in the U.S. "as things maybe start to
taper" domestically. "Our international pillar gives us a real hedge," he concluded.
Zaslav said that one big new initiative for Discovery was taking Turbo/Velocity
around the world like TLC and others have been taken worldwide.
Ross on Tuesday touted Discovery's position as the No. 1 cable network for men 2554 and its highest reach ever in February, along with its rising reach among women
25-54 now.
He said the network will this year celebrate its 30th anniversary and vowed to
continue focusing on "programming that is authentic," active and relevant and
relatable." Ross also touted Shark Week, which last year reached 42 million viewers
to have its highest-rated week ever.
Asked about his approach to scripted programming, Zaslav said: "Scripted is quite
expensive." He added that the company would do it in select cases and was looking
mainly for projects that can work worldwide.
