Erosion!

Students will be looking at cause and effect of erosion within natural features. This will be
explored through using a range photos as matching cards. Students are required to identify the
differences between before and after photos and explore this through small group discussions.
Year Level: Grade 1
Australian Curriculum:
The natural, managed and constructed features of places, their location, how they change and
how they can be cared for
Learning Intentions:
Match before and after erosion photos
Discuss the differences between these photos
Materials Needed:
Erosions matching cards (see resources below)
Sandpit
Water
Classroom Organisation: Small Group Activity

Instructions:

Turn all of the cards face down on the ground


Take turns in turning over two cards each
If they dont match then turn them back to face down, move on to the next person
If they do match then state which photo is before and after. Explain what you think could
have caused the erosion and how it is fixed now? Now you get another turn!
5. Move onto the next person
6. Continue until all the cards have been used
7. One the activity is complete this how we can care for our environment?
Extension:
Build hills and mountains out of sand in a sandpit.
Poor water into the sandpit
What happens to the sand?

Modifications for Diverse Learners:


Use small groups allows students to assist one another throughout the activity. If students are
struggling with this activity then scaffolding questions can be asked to assist with the learning
intention:
- How do the photos look different?
- What can you see that is the same in each photo?
- Are there any features that can cause erosion?

- How do you know this?
