Special education is
specially designed
instruction that meets
the needs of an
exceptional student
that might require
special materials,
techniques, and/or
equipment.

Individualized

GOAL
DIRECTED!

Response-to-Intervention (RTI)
Its an evaluation to see if your child
will succeed better in a more managed,
individualized setting
Reauthorization of the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
There are varying levels of general
education before being referred to
special education
Progress was, is, and will be monitored
throughout the entire process

Professionals
want children of
all general and
special education
classes to be
educated in as
normal an
environment as
possible, known
as the least
restrictive
environment.

If accommodations have been made and student is not making progress,

the last step is forming an IEP.

IEP stands for Individualized

Education Program, a legal
document created with the
efforts of the teacher, school
administrator, parent, and
even student. It describes, in
detail, the education and
services that will be provided
for the child when the previous
options just arent working.

Your childs IEP

What are the goals

we are aiming for?

What
accommodations
have already been
made for the
student?
Have they worked? If
not, were other
accommodations
made?

Based off of the information we

have, what future accommodations
should be made? What kind of
connections from teacher to
parent can be made? Whats the
overall decision of the placement
of the child?

Inclusion vs. Separation

Based off of the concept of LRE and through the IEP, the parent and teachers
will decide what the best location is for the child.

Students can utilize different locations for different amounts of time

based on the individualized need of the child discussed in an
IEP meeting.

Additional Resources for Families, Parents,

and Students

With all the numerous

requirements, steps, and
processes that are involved
with placing a child in special
education and diagnosing a
disability, coping physically and
emotionally can be challenging
for the entire family. Teachers,
schools, and outside programs
are all there for the sole
purpose of helping the child
gain an education and helping
the family be a part of it.

Final Thoughts

With proper
communication and
cooperation of the
parents and teachers,
special education is a
rewarding way to help a
child get the best
available resources
possible.

Reflection

With all of the different topics relevant to exceptional learners, I

felt like explaining what special education is will first make the
parents realize that it isnt necessarily a special case, and that
many children utilize its different programs. They will feel more
comfortable with the term. Then it should be narrowed down to
exactly what the parent will see and deal with when placed in the
position of having a child diagnosed with a disability. Its important to
inform them of the flow of placing a child in special education, so they
know exactly what to expect in the order it will more than likely occur.
From the teacher acknowledging the students issues, to making
classroom changes, to creating an IEP and deciding where the child
will be placed, there is a lot that goes into having an exceptional
child. The least a teacher can do for the parents is to make it as easy
as possible to understand the process.
