Cultural differences between US, UK, Australia

LANGUAGE

US

UK

There is no official language of the

United States, according to the U.S.
government. While almost every
language in the world is spoken in the
United States, Spanish, Chinese, French
and German are among the most
frequently
spoken
non-English
languages. Ninety percent of the U.S.
population speaks and understands at
least some English, and most official
business is conducted in English.

The United Kingdom does not have a

official
language. English is the main language
(being spoken monolingually by more
than 70% of the UK population) and is
thus the de facto official language.

AUSTRALIA

The

colonization has been English, with
little multi-lingualism among the
majority population. Nevertheless,

include Welsh, Irish, Ulster Scots,
Cornish, Gaelic and British Sign
Language.

RELIGION
Nearly every known religion is
practiced in the United States, which
was founded on the basis of religious
freedom. About 83 percent of
Americans identify themselves as
Christians, according to an ABC poll,
while 13 percent replied that they had
no religion at all. It also found that
Judaism is the second most-identified
religious affiliation, at about 1.7
percent of the population. Only 0.6
percent of respondents identified as
Muslim.

The constitution guarantees religious

freedom, and while there is no official
national religion, Australia generally is
described as a Christian country.

CLOTHING

Clothing styles vary by social status,

region, occupation and climate. Jeans,
sneakers, baseball caps, cowboy hats
and boots are some items of clothing
that are closely associated with
Americans. Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein,
Michael Kors and Victoria Secret are
some American brands.

FOOD
American cuisine has been influenced
by Europeans and Native Americans in
its early history. Today, there are a
number of foods that are commonly
identified as American, such as
hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips,
macaroni and cheese, and meat loaf.
Fried chicken, collard greens, blackeyed peas and corn bread. Jerky, dried
meats that are served as snacks, is also
a food that was created in the United
States

As the UK is very much a western

society they wear very much the same
as any other modern western society ranging from Jeans and Tee shirts
(whether with designer labels or not) to
full business suits for office work (if
required). Special clothes for the
climate include heavy overcoats or
anoraks for cold wintry weather to
raincoats and umbrellas, for weather
rain. Materials used cover every type
and colour of fabric available, especially

society and in certain cities (Bradford
for an example) you will find many
stores with very colourful silk available
for making in Sari's and other ethnic
clothes.
British food has traditionally been
based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken and
fish and generally served with potatoes
and one other vegetable. The most
common and typical foods eaten in
Britain include the sandwich, fish and
chips, pies like Cornish pasty, trifle and
roasts dinners. Some of four main
dishes have strange names like Bubble
& Squeak and Toad-in-the-Hole.

Act 1

While Australia has no single uniform

national costume, an Australian
national dress style, based on specific
local dress styles, has emerged in
response to climate, lifestyle and
identity.

In 2007 a typical custom was promoted,

it consisted in a farmer shirt, a leather
belt, a waterproof coat, pants, elastic
rubber boots, etc. Clothes that First
minister adopted to attend an event of
world leaders in that year.

Before colonization, Aboriginal peoples

were sustained by a diverse range of
flora and fauna. The early settlers
primarily consumed meat (at first
native animals, later beef and mutton),
bread, and vegetables, particularly
potatoes.

SPORTS
The United States is a sports-minded
country, with millions of fans who
follow football, baseball, basketball and
hockey, among other sports. Baseball,
which was developed in colonial
America and became an organized
sport in the mid-1800s, is known as
Americas favorite pastime, although
its popularity has been eclipsed by
football for the past three decades.

HOLIDAYS

CURRENCY

Any holidays are celebrated only in the

United States. Americans celebrate
their independence from Britain on July
4. Memorial Day, celebrated on the last
Monday in May, honors those who
have died in military service. Labor Day,
observed on the first Monday in
September,
celebrates
countrys
workforce.
Thanksgiving,
another
distinctive American holiday, falls on
the fourth Thursday in November and
dates back to colonial times to
celebrate the harvest. Presidents Day,
marking the birthdays of George
Washington and Abraham Lincoln, is a
federal holiday that occurs on the third
Monday in February. The contributions
of veterans are honored on Veterans
Day, observed on Nov. 11. The
contributions
of
civil
rights
leader Martin Luther King Jr. are
remembered on the third Monday in
January.

The Celebration of the Birthday of the

Queen is held on the second Saturday in
June. Other legal holidays include New
Year's Day, Good Friday, Late Summer
Holiday (the last Monday in August or
the first in September), Christmas Day,
and Boxing Day (26 December).

Act 1

Probably the most significant national

secular celebration is Anzac Day on 25
April. This is a public holiday that
commemorates the Australia and New
Zealand Army Corps landing at Gallipoli
in Turkey in 1915. On Remembrance
Day (11 November), which is not a
public holiday, a two-minute silence is
observed
in
remembrance
of
Australians who fought and died in
wars.

Scotland
and
Northern
Ireland,
celebrate several of their own holidays. Australia Day is celebrated on 26
January to commemorate British
settlement, and many capital cities host
a fireworks event. New Year's Day and
New Year's Eve are celebrated.
